100 Years First Single?

Postby Toph » Sat Mar 21, 2009 4:15 am

Does anyone know if the title track will be the first single off 100 Years From Now? Or will it be Save Me, This Time Next Year or one of the new songs? Regardless, isn't it about time to release a new single given that the album is only 3 weeks from being released?

I think he's releasing the surprise, bonus track
"Miss America".

Supposed to be rocking!

;)
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Perhaps "Blue Collar Man"? That one has not been recorded nearly enough.

I doubt a single will even be released. JMO on this.

Why wouldn't you release something? That makes no sense whatsoever..

Because it likely would get no airplay. I am just guessing about this. The CD is being handled very differently here than it was in Canada. He had that video pre-release promo on MSN. Radio promotion. Etc.

It would be great if they did release a single, but which song? No hints in his interviews so far.

It's not going to get airplay anyway. Styx and Dennis are just not relevant to music these days and radio is too caught up in format or image to bend. It's not a slight on their music, but it's just a different playing field.

Do you think the new Styx/REO single is going to get a lot of airplay, either? Let's be real. It's 2009. Not 1979. The whole music industry including radio is in disarray.

Be thankful that both Styx and Dennis are able to release some form of new product now, whether it be download or physical.

I don't think anyone is fooling themselves into thinking either Styx or Dennis will set the world on fire with their music these days. Dennis still sounds both grateful and stunned at how well his single performed in Quebec. Should something like that happen in the US, he would count it a miracle, I am sure, and be equally grateful and stunned.

The fact that he has a label willing to release NEW music from him is quite the honor and he, again, sounds thrilled for that opportunity afforded him. I know I could not be happier to have new DeYoung music in my life in 2009, much less an entire album.

Here's where we can agree to disagree. I know some folks here post just to take the piss out of each other, but there are genuinely some delusional people who do believe that Styx and/or Dennis can be big again. I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if it happens.

Do you honestly think Journey's latest sold well because it was a new album? I heard no tracks on the radio. It sold well largely because it was at the USA's largest music retailer as an exclusive (Walmart, which is a scary thought), sold for about $10, and included a hits package as well as a DVD in addition to the new album. Plus, you had the feel good story around Arnel. I like Journey but I can't name one tune off of that album. It also helps that Irving Azoff is managing Journey; he's no fool.

If Styx or Dennis did something similar (new album + re-recorded hits in the studio + DVD), I would almost bet it would go at least gold with the right hype/push. Criticize Azoff all you want, as a manager he's made some shrewd moves for Journey. Some worked (Walmart), others not (Generations). Ironically, Azoff also handles REO as well as JOurney. Didn't they have a Walmart exclusive that did pretty well, too?

Yeppers.. and I still hear "Find Your Own Way Home" on Satellite Radio and other locations here in Alberta.

I think if REO would have done what Journey did and made it cost less (I still think their album sold for around 14-17.99 for the most part) it could have at least gone gold for them.

But they're still laughing, I'm sure they got a pretty sweet cut of the profit.. whatever they sold.

Speaking of Journey, have you guys seen the RIAA Album awards they've been handing out for Revelation? Freakin SWEET looking..

There's some pics of them on the Journey board.

Actually, from the Journey album, I have heard, "After All These Years".. I can certainly see where everyone is coming from as far as a new Dennis or Styx song being ignored on radio, but I think it would be a mistake to not at least release a promotional single.. you just never know. I think he should have gone another direction with the title track; that was probably his best chance at getting airplay, but I think any album should at least have one lead promotional single.

No one is saying Rounder isn't going to release a single ... no one has heard of one announced yet. Rounder clearly has a vested interest in selling the album!

I don't see radio lining up for Styx, either. They share a common problem.

I agree. I would think that Rounder would want to lead with something - heck something from the album to send to some channel of distribution in an effort to get airplay - even if it is a grocery store. I'm assuming they will stick with the title track, although I believe that there are other songs on the album that would actually have a better chance to breakthrough as a single. I have no idea what type of station would pick up 100 Years from Now - it is too rockin' for AC, not current enough for Hot AC, nowhere near Top 40, no rocking enough for Rock Stations....no clue where it would go. The only possibility I see would be Save Me or Forgiveness or I Believe In You on AC.

Agree here, Toph. The only one I see having an AC possibility is "I Believe in You."

Huh. Goes to show ya we all have different ears. LOL "I Believe in You" is definitely towards the bottom of the list of what sounds commercial to me. I have a hard time imagining that song even having legs, much less running with them! (Not a slight to the song itself... I just think it's far from the best shot. I tend to agree more with "Save Me...")

Meh! I have gone back and forth on liking Save Me since the release, for me there is something missing about that song.
While I like all of the rock songs better than the ballads on the CD, I do believe the release would need to be a ballad. IMO "I believe in you" would make a better single than Save Me. That said, perhaps the new ballad "There was a Time" will be better than the other 2. The small snippet of the song on the show on Rockline and the small snippet on bestbuy.com leads me to believe it should be a good ballad.

Like the new sequencing a lot!

Put your best foot forward and put the strongest songs up front...100 Years, TTNY, Rain, Rubicon, Save Me...great way to open up the album.. Start of the "second side" with a rocker like Private Jones..End strong with Forgiveness and CNN. An improvement IMO over the Canadian release with no "Respect Me" and with the two new songs. Has critical potential if not commerical - and maybe at this stage in his career that is what DDY is looking for.
