It is actually quite laughable how they go out of their way to exclude DDY and his contributions in a very selectively written bio. No mention of the songs Babe, Best of Times, Show Me The Way, Grand Illusion, Don't Let It End, Mr. Roboto (Except in the VW commerical - which since it lined JY's pockets is evidently ok to mention). No mention of the albums Cornerstone, Kilroy, or Edge. Mentions "Too Much Time" and not "Best of Times". No mention of Suite Madame Blue or Rockin The Paradise...

Get over it and grow up guys.


STYX - Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips (along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo), have performed more live since ’99 than all of the previous years of its career combined. Two Super-Bowl appearances, Pollstar Box Office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company (to name only a few), two more studio albums and no end in sight, STYX continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time.

Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early ‘70s, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads.

Early on, Styx's music reflected such then-current prog rockers as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Moody Blues, as evidenced by such releases as 1972's self-titled debut, 1973's Styx II, 1974's The Serpent Is Rising, and 1975's Man of Miracles. While the albums (as well as non-stop touring) helped the group build a substantial following locally, Styx failed to break through to the mainstream, until a track originally from their second album, "Lady" started to get substantial airplay in late '74 on the Chicago radio station WLS-FM. The song was soon issued as a single nationwide, and quickly shot to number six on the singles chart, as Styx II was certified gold. By this time, however, the group had grown disenchanted with their record label, and opted to sign on with A&M for their fifth release overall, 1975's Equinox (their former label would issue countless compilations over the years, culled from tracks off their early releases). On the eve of the tour in support of the album, original guitarist John Curulewski abruptly left the band, and was replaced by Tommy Shaw. Shaw proved to be the missing piece of the puzzle for Styx, as most of their subsequent releases throughout the late '70s earned at least platinum certification (1976's Crystal Ball, 1977's The Grand Illusion, 1978's Pieces of Eight, and 1979's Cornerstone), and spawned such hit singles and classic rock radio standards as "Come Sail Away," "Renegade," "Blue Collar Man" and "Fooling Yourself.”

The band decided that their first release of the '80s would be a concept album, 1981's Paradise Theater, which was loosely based on the rise and fall of a once-beautiful theater (which was supposedly used as a metaphor for the state of the U.S. at the time -- the Iranian hostage situation, the Cold War, Reagan, etc.). Paradise Theater became Styx's biggest hit of their career (selling over three million copies in a three-year period), as they became one of the U.S. top rock acts due to such big hit singles as "Too Much Time on My Hands". It also marked the first time in history that a band released four consecutive triple-platinum albums.

A career-encompassing live album, Caught in the Act, was issued in 1984, before Styx went on hiatus, and the majority of its members pursued solo projects throughout the remainder of the decade. A re-recording of their early hit, "Lady" (titled "Lady" '95"), for a Greatest Hits compilation, finally united Shaw with his former Styx bandmates, which led to a full-on reunion tour in 1996. But drummer John Panozzo fell seriously ill at the time (due to a long struggle with alcoholism), which prevented him from joining the proceedings -- as he passed away in July of the same year. Although grief-stricken, Styx persevered with new drummer Todd Sucherman taking the place of Panozzo, as the Styx reunion tour became a surprise sold-out success, resulting in the release of a live album/video, 1997's "Return to Paradise," while a whole new generation of rock fans were introduced to the grandiose sounds of Styx via a humorous car ad which used the track "Mr. Roboto," as well as songs used in such TV shows as South Park and Freaks & Geeks.

I am a fan of current Styx but that website SUCKS! Ugly colors, nothing really worth looking at. I wanted to see a collection of photos (many rare) from the early days up until now. No mention of DDY....that is just plain stupid. They don't record new music so they basically are a hits band minus some originals. I really wish they would pull their head out and bring the fans something to get excited about.

To think, I actually started to believe that there was this goodwill building between Tommy and Dennis.

In their interviews there have been a few good things said, but as DDY said they have not talked to each other at all in the past few years, meaning that Tommy doesn't know about the nice things Dennis has said about him [and vice versa]. Plus, I think the idea was put out there that even though Tommy controls the band, JY has some level of control over Tommy, which if true could be the reason the website ended up the way it did[and why the fued continues ever on].

I am disgusted by that "bio" on the website. Blatantly erasing anything DDY related from their history is stupid and childish. With as much trimming as they did, I'm surprised they even mentioned that "Lady" was their breakthrough single. I mean there are so many fans that they have these days that don't know the actual history that Styx could have just as easily said "Crystal Ball" or "Fooling Yourself" was their breakthrough hit and the casuals would have eaten it right up.

As for what someone said earlier about a new CD, I think that there's a good chance we could be getting one. 3 reasons
1. It would be following a highly promoted tour [sponsored by VH1 and Rock Band],
2.a new website [with revised history]. Why would they just randomly create a new website? Is it just for the tour?, or a sign they are going in a new direction?
3. A new DDY album in the states to compete with. Someone on here said that the reason so much effort was put into Cyclo was to 1-up DDY, and since DDY has just released a new [and very kick-ass] album, the guys may feel they need to 1-up him yet again. [Cause you know, they NEED to be dominant. If they're not, than they are not right.]

Initially, Journey did the same thing on there new website, pretty much making it look like the band started in 2007. After a few months they redid the Bio correctly and added a nice classic photo section with dozens of pictures of SP era Journey.

Can't figure out why, but maybe there is some legal reason why they'd do that. Maybe DDY doesn't want them to use his name to help promote the band in any way with its current form? Not sure why he'd do that either as any pub is good pub.

Well in a way you're right. He is very tiny in the discography section. His picture is still on the cover of Styx II and The Grand Illusion. It wouldn't have shocked me had they airbrushed him out ala Van Halen and Michael Anthony. But at least they didn't do that.

You are right. There HAS been less mud and more positive vibes coming from both camps over these last couple of years, and it is refreshing - won't disagree with you there. That said, just because everyone has settled down and relaxed should not be an indication that the parties are on their way to mending fences. The rift happened, and it was pretty ugly. Things were said and done that I suspect will never heal entirely, and those types of things don't just change. The Styx camp still feels the same way about Dennis that they've always felt and vice versa. The only difference is that now some time has passed, and everyone has had a chance to chill. So, why is their not making Dennis a big part of the site a surprise or disappointment for anybody? I never would have expected them to. OK, it's a little bit silly, IMO, but it Doesn't undo every positive vibe they've sent out over the last few years. Just means they are happily separate entities now (which we already knew and most have come to accept).

LOL...someone in this thread posted lyrics from "Dear John" and asked where that sentiment was. I'm sure I don't need to say that the song was written for John, a guy who everybody liked, that passed away before he really should have. I hardly think the situation with Dennis qualifies for a picnic in the daisies one day. (That was a little sarcastic, I'm sorry. But you do get what I'm trying to say, right?) Not the same situation AT ALL.

Hey, it's our favorite childhood band, as Froy so eloquently put it. But wouldn't our "parents" be more proud of us if we didn't harbor our own resentment over their break-up? I bet they would. Leave the resentments to the people involved and be happy that so many of them are still alive, well, and coming to a theatre (or shed, or casino, or pig show) near you!
