I think they are being underestimated by some, and as I keep saying, that is a good thing. And fun trashing is fine and it will go both ways. Don't worry

One reason why Butterfly goalies are destined for failure....My surpressed desire in highschool was to be an NHL goalie. And if I was a bit bigger in stature I probably would have played in college. Goalies like Hasek - who flop around and do unorthadox stuff, contrary to popular belief, are arguably better - stylistically.......Either that, or the goalie must drop down a bit earlier in the save....but then that leads to opening up top shelf later on in the game/series. I've always been a proponent of leaving my glove side wide open(have a quick glove hand) and luring opponents to shoot on my left side. One of my deficiencies is moving right. Moving left isn't a problem - so I always cover my right. Now I'm sad. Man I wish I was an NHL goalie. 8)

How can anyone think the Penguins are underdogs when they have Sydney Crosby...the most Holy!
I think I want him to lose more than I want the Wings to win. Can you imagine all the nauseating crap that will go on if he wins?

And that's Huet's problem. He drops too early.
I still can't believe he pulled of 44 saves last night.

He had a great night last night! At least there was pride in that game. If you have to lose, it was better than being killed like the canes were their last game.

People like you will never understand people like me or Red.

I utilize "we" quite frequently when it comes to sports (esp. Steelers) because I grew up in a family that worked hard for what little they have and had a 'city' like attitude when growing up. A place like Pittsburgh will never be ahead in the world of an economy, and will always get hit the hardest when the whole country is experiencing a down fall.

Still, Pittsburgh is one of the most hard working cities in the world, and we as a city take pride in that. Sports teams in Pittsburgh play the way the city is represented. Tough as nails, hard working, blue collar, and I get knocked down, but I get up again.. is that all you got attitude.

We might not be the wealthiest city in America, but we come ready and work hard and make an honest living, and we portray that through our sports teams to keep us on the map (I might add we are the most beautiful city..take a walk downtown Pitt one night, it's a beaut) thus, making the city of Pittsburgh as "WE".. as in WE, the Pittsburgh Steelers, or Pittsburgh Penguins.. or yes, sadly, the Pittsburgh Pirates are the city of Pittsburgh and we are damn proud to say so. Plus I've spend hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds into thousands of money on Steelers tickets, and merchandise. To experience a game where 65,000 + people put away their differences for ONE DAY and become family is a very special thing.

I was JUST trying to explain to someone ELSE why I don't root for my local teams here, and why I root for Pitt teams, and this would have been a great response! Nah, you pretty much covered it.

That's 95% of what I do around here - joke and poke fun.

As for cities with familial attitudes about sports... come on... we got the Cubs, we haven't won the series in over 100 years and Wrigley Field is near enough to capacity (if not AT) just about all season long. From April to September, you can't go anywhere without seeing throngs of people in Cubs blue. "We" suck, but damn it, we embrace it! I think we get the golden goose egg for sports loyalty, based on the Cubs alone. :(

It's true, but when as a fan you HAVE to go too, it's just not the same picking some other team just because they are local and I can get to a game. I still want to root for my comfort team! (I'm such a girl  )

That's a whole different scenario. Root for whoever you want but that's what separates the fans from the diehards. Diehards are emotionally connected through the city/team and fans just root for a team they prefer.

*Stands up and applauds loudly!*

Exactly... not that I'm from Pittsburgh, but especially along the Appalachian range that is 100% true with the whole blue collar ethics and economic short end of the stick. That attitude runs in the blood, it's how we're brought up. To be proud of everything "home" and whether some people think it is silly or not, we don't care... our sports teams aren't just entertainment or past-times. People like us take on that pride, bleed the colors, and suffer and celebrate along with those guys because we're all in it together. Maybe we take it too serious, but like you said... they just don't get it. It's like a family thing. Everyone matters, from the quarterbacks to the goalies to the coaches to the superstitious fan in the face paint.

Damn proud. Yup. 8)

It's a city thing where the fans can bond and come together as one and represent their stomping grounds through competition, and it's our job as fans to keep it going. Think about it, players come and go, but we will always be here.

Well, I never thought of myself as a die hard, but then I DO have an emotional connection. I MISS living in western PA, so I think it makes the connection stronger in some ways. Weird, huh?
