Why would anyone at a Dennis DeYoung concert ask about MISS AMERICA unless they were either looking for trouble or retarded? (and I realize the question is both rhetorical and redundant)

Dennis even told the Die Hards to throw that guy out (or some joking reference like that)... basically a joke to tell the die hards to give the guy a clue. Dennis handled it VERY well :)

Probably sitting next to that friend of yours on facebook that did nothing but complain about the show Zan.

They are great songs but this is a unique show.
Dennis needs to get some balls and stop worrying about the casual fan.
The best show he ever did solo was The HOB Chicago Lost Treasures show.
It was loaded with rare tunes Best Thing Borrowed Tome Im Ok ect
Nobody bitched about that.

Hate to tell you Froy, this show was NOT billed as a Lost Treasures show. It was billed as an acoustic show, and as such, I wasn't expecting songs like "Father OSA". I was expecting some surprises (maybe 1 or 2, and got that), maybe some Glen singing lead (got that), and most of the hits somewhat reworked (got that). At this point, I would rather hear Dennis pull out "Don't Wait for Heroes" or "Call Me" instead of another Styx cut (except maybe "Best Thing", "Pieces of Eight", or "I'm OK" again).

Oh, and in this show you got the one thing fans have been bitching about for years: Dennis played piano. No hired guns.

That HOB show was one of Dennis' best (in the top 5), but IMO not his best that I've seen. In no particular order: Rye Playland, first orchestral show at the Rosemont, the BB Kings acoustic show, the HOB show, and the first show with Glen at the State Theater in NJ.

Ok - I'll say this because I heard it myself. When the guys were in the middle of the Desert Moon, All In A Days Work all the way down to Loreli, there were two guys on my right saying "Come on play some Styx"... only one Styx song in that entire 20-30 minute part of the show.

Dennis knows what he is doing. Maybe you can hire him (Froy) and he can play your birthday party and you can dictate what songs he will play (and likely tell you where to go in the process) but your setlist will never be heard. And it has nothing to do with Dennis "Getting some balls".

Of course, Styx has been playing the same 10-15 songs for 10 years and the fact that Dennis did a throwback to some of the arrangements of 1996-1997 was pretty damn refreshing. And BAM was just awesome. I know for a fact Dennis wishes he had written that song :)

Then "The hell" with about 3/4 of his audience. Why would you want him to play to an empty house?

I'm not back - I just feel it's very disrespectful to keep making fun - of not Dennis, but his wife. I'll drop it now as I've said my piece. I'm just ticked about it because I've dealt with and have known Dennis and Suzanne for a few years now and they've only ever been the nicest of people. It's just a shame when people get called names over how they look. The people doing it are better than that and not that shallow - why they choose to act so is puzzling.

The show was great. THe most interesting part was seeing Dennis make the transition from being the frontman/lead vocalist to playing behind the piano while singing. He was likely doing something he hasn't done for the last ten years at least on a regular basis.

This was also the loosest I have seen Dennis, with a lot of things out of his control like more than 2 rehearsals due to him being sick last week, not appearing to have an effect on him. When he got lost during Lorelei because he was concentrating on the piano part and Hank had to kick off the second verse with a look from Glen laughing because it is usually him that forgets where he is, Dennis just laughed it off.

Hopefully, this will show Dennis that he can be behind the piano and doesn't have to give it up to please his fans. I liken it to the Billy Joel/Elton John Face to Face tour where Elton is glued to his piano seat and Billy does a combination of sit down and lead. Dennis could certainly be more like Billy.

All and all a great show.

Best Dennis Joke of the evening: I want to thank everyone for coming, I always wanted to play Burger King..... Glen: No that's BB King.

The early orchestral shows had "Harry's Hands". It was great live. I don't think he did it past about 2002 or so. I'd be up for "Unanswered Prayers", and he's done "Black Wall". IMO Back to the World is underrated. When he had the sax player for the early orchestral shows, I was really hoping he'd pull out "Call Me". Maybe someday :)

I agree it was the loosest Styx related show, probably ever even going back to the early days. Extended solos on piano or guitar, eyeballing to see when/how to end songs, slightly messed up parts, a few do-overs for endings. Now, it was evident (at least to me) it got to Dennis at points and he wasn't happy about it not being as tight as it usually is, but I really enjoyed that it was not the usually every minute and intro planned thing we usually get. This is but one of the reasons why it's in my top 5 for DDY shows. I think DDY enjoyed it, but it was a bit nerve wracking for him since it was literally two rehearsals and this. I wish bands I played with could get it together this well sometimes (it happens, but infrequently). In fact, everyone on stage seemed to be having a good time. The harmonies were tight. Add a drummer and you'd almost have bizzaro Styx lol

Call Me would have been great for the acoustic show. Heck, even "Beneath The Moon" from Boomchild would have been great with that setup. Likely just a but too obscure for that crowd tho. I could have done without Desert Moon - that one is just getting a little old for my personal taste, but to each their own.

Chiming In

Postby TWOSTYXUP » Tue Jun 09, 2009 6:24 am

I absolutely loved this show and of course when you play to group of die hard DDY fans and Styx fans and an avg. random crowd you are going to get a mixed bag of emotions and requests because everyone wants to hear something special to them. Yes I'd have loved Father, CDL, or Harry's Hands but the show was awesome, BAM was truly special and Jeff throwing in some guitar solo work and snips of NR was a nice touch. It was unique and unusual and if it wasn't just another DDY rock show, There were new jokes, new comments and freshness. We did NOT have to hear about Linda Blair or some Tommy bashing inuendos. I loved the mix, the harmonies and DDY on the piano was like "old times" It worked well. I also just loved the eyeglass/facemask that Hank put on before Roboto. ALSO...Just have to say...I have never been a big fan of Suzanne and the few times I have met Dennis, Suzanne was NOT very nice to say the least and tried her best to ruch him away with an annoyed look, BUT she was different this time. After the show she actually took our Promo PW Crystal ball and POE Ashtray back for Dennis to sign. She smiled, she was pleasant and she sat right in front of us at a small table mostly videotaping during the show. It was a nice change for SDY to be in this element.
