Who watched Private Sessions?

Usual Dennis stuff here. He's usually a good interview and no different here although a little to jokey for me. Dennis produced every Styx record up to 1998? I think a little stretch there. Also laughable was the interviewer (forget her name) not understanding why the other guys have the Styx name and Dennis doesn't.

As far as the performance it was nice to see Glen but they should have left out Roboto. Absolutely terrible. 100 Years was actually pretty decent and they talked a good deal about the new album so maybe it will produce a few more sales...it can't hurt.

He did produce every album until Brave New World in which he only produced his tracks.

He did produce every album until Brave New World in which he only produced his tracks.

Incorrect....he soley produced Edge of the Century and RTP but STYX produced the previous A&M records. He may have played the lead role in production, especially Cornerstone through Kilroy, but to say he was the sole producer...i believe that to be an incorrect statement.

I found Dennis to be a bit hyper on this particular show. He probably should have toned it down in that small area they have to perform. That said, his voice sounded great, though I agree that Roboto should have been ditched over maybe something else from the new album.

The interview was fine and I liked the story he told about "The Perfect Man" filming.

Do they repeat these things? As usual, my husband had total command of the TV/Remote, so I didn't even get to find out what was on, so that I could see it in the program listing (my husband insists that there are only 6-8 channels worth checking). :roll:

And Roboto.... why Dennis, why? The song is obviously a touchy spot with your fans and I hope that it wasn't done the way it was on the acoustic youtubes. That was horrendous.

He should've done Private Jones. That woulda rocked. Maybe he did, I haven't seen it yet. It would've been cool of him to play a bunch of new stuff.

I like Mr Robot on the A&E show. Had it cranked up on the system and the whole show was good.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend because of a softball tournament. I would have liked to go. I heard the Styx show in Chicago on Friday night was sold out.

Only one person that I know of who went to the Pritzker concert said she was in far front but when she turned around she saw a "sea of people." I think the venue holds around 8000.

I am guessing, since it was free, and it was a spectacular day, there were a LOT of people there to hear Dennis.

True this. As a fan of DDY, I am happy when he attracts a good-sized audience. Current Styx? I don't care. At one time I did, but no more. Pointless.

I believe, and correct me Bugsy if I am mistaken, the individual also said he thanked his former bandmates when accepting his award in Chicago.

I thought it was interesting. A few thoughts.

Dennis sounded great although there were some definite monitoring issues that contributed to his vocals wavering at times. I found it interesting he was wearing earplugs instead of in-ear monitors. Tommy Shaw's dog thing made me laugh. I thought he was kind towards his former bandmates.

I do not like Tom's interpretation of the guitar parts or his sound. He has effectively removed the testosterone from the guitar parts and sprinkled them with estrogen.

I question whether Glen's amplifier was even on. He also really struggled with the background vocals. Possibly a monitor problem.

The bass player is tight. I liked his slapping on Mr. Roboto.

One expects a certain caliber of competency from a professional guitarist (musican). Tommy decided to play his own style for the first part of the solo and then finished off the last part with the original score. The fact that he played the second part of the solo the way it was originally written shows us that he is perfectly capable of playing it like it was intended. In my humble opinion, the solo was lazy and unprofessional.

On this point, Shaka, I have to agree with you.

I think Tom can play guitar fine for certain styles but his phrasing and tone doesn't do Styx music justice. I saw some clips where Dennis had a second guitarist (not Glen) and it sounded awesome.

the only recorded Tommy D guitar solo that ever really"WOW'd" me was on DDY's "the music of Styx" CD on the song Black Wall...........

I think he suffers a fate similar to Gowans....its hard to accept someone other than TS or JY doing the solos, aven if he gets all the noets right the "phrasing" or style of playing will sound different.

I've honestly never been super impressed with Tommy D's guitar playing. He sounds good enough on the solo albums and what not, but live he's just never impressed me. He doesn't have the attention to detail that the other guys did. I dunno if it's a laziness or a genuine lack of understanding how the song is played. The one thing I can think of specifically that sticks in my craw is how he plays the opening bits of Rockin' The Paradise. That just sounds lazy to me.

The second guitarist is Jimmy Leahey. He can certainly hold his own. He actually does the 100 years solo when he's with the band but he was touring with John Waite at the time of filming.

As for me, I do like Tommy's phrasing and tone but in this instance (the solo on Private Sessions) he was perfectly capable of doing the solo as it should be done and he chose not to. The solo was written that way for a reason but he watered it down. Not very professional in my opinion, as much as it pains me to say it.

I think I know the part you're referring to, Mike. He seems to play a certain two notes much closer to each other than the original. That being said, segueing from one note to the other is his style of playing (I think this is what the musicians on this board refer to as phrasing if I understand correctly) for good or for bad.

As a guitarist who has done a lot of studio and live work I know the difference. I've seen a lot of guys cover Styx and sound great doing it.

Tommy D's playing is a style that you would hear a lot in the eighties. Very light touch and a very compressed sound. He would fit into a band like Chicago perfectly.
