I'm sure there's plenty of Perry fans that'll bypass J for the Hugo tribute just to have a Perry moment. I think Schon doesn't want potential new fans to be introduced to what they used to look like.

If he manages to stifle Evolution, the other acts will be targets as well. The original is now competing with 3 or 4 popular tribute acts. I think Schon's overreacting by singling out Hugo. Schon can't stop him from looking like Perry.

I think it was said earlier that Evolution is advertising themselves as "The Journey Show". Which is probably what's got him upset. I'd have to agree on that point.

Aaron's a Hugohead. I think Hugo is great on his Valentine stuff. Just not my favorite singer on Journey material.

I love his solo material. The self-titled Hugo cd would give a lot of bands a run for their money in the quality department. Good songwriter and singer--he just doesn't have the vocal depth to sing Journey. Too bad I don't live in an area where he would at least occasionally perform a solo show.

I do like that line they use though:

"Evolution does Journey better than Journey does now!"

I can't resist:

I don't know. I have Hugo and Valentine music. I just think he is really weak on the Journey music. He goes for the look ($$$) but it just doesn't cut it for me.

There's more to this than Schon taking notice to the use of 'art' and/or the impression that Neal gets that these bands are presenting something fraudulant...I'm with Andrew on this....there's a bigger story here that what is current presented, and to suggest that Neal's 100% in the right here, is just being an Arneliot....

One thing, that i think stings, is that with Arnel singing for Journey (being a sound-alike replacement)....that makes very little difference between real Journey and say, Evolution, Escape or any of the other Journey tribute acts....It was way different when Journey was being fronted by already established lead singers like Perry, Augeri or JSS. But with Arnel it is a different story. No one knew him from a hole in the wall prior to his inclusion into the Journey lineup...

So there in lies the conflict. Journey tribute band singers and Arnel himself are not differentiated in ANY way possible. So that leaves the defining factor being the instrumentation. Perhaps Neal is just getting his back up over the fact that the only thing separating Journey from a tribute act is his playing? If that's the case, there's some merit behind his complaint...yet I will maintain it's tenuous at best. But Perhaps its more that he needs to voice his opposition to tribute acts so that he can brand-differentiate his singer.....if THATS the case, then his actions are pretty fucked up, because he's trying to do with words, what he was/is unable to do with his guitar.

If that is ultimately the case, perhaps it might be time to send the little pinoy back to manila and start thinking about this band's legacy again!

I just don't see what there is to get so work up about. They're done with their tour, and Journey have allways had a lot of tribute bands. On a side note: does anyone else find that hugo guy to be disturbingly creepy? think about it for a second. He wakes up every morning, brushes his teeth, ponders what kind of perry wig he'll be wearing, and hey, maybe he'll even put on a frontiers mustache ... i dunno - it's just weird

who knows what's going on? i do think tribute bands using likenesses of artwork or something to perhaps confuse people is a crock. the original artists have worked hard at making their name and then to have some guys come along and capitalize on it is too much. it would be totally different if the original act is no longer producing and touring and tributes filled the void. why not play original songs rather than make a living off someone else's art?

Hugo is a very good guy! I spoke to him several years ago when considering doing some web work for him.

He didn't wake up one morning and go "I think I'll try to act/look like Perry. It's just the way he is. He fucking sounds like Perry in normal every day speech. I'm not sure that there's much he could do...and even if there was, I wouldn't do so if I were him. If I were born a certain way, and that way happened to be that I looked and sounded like Perry.....fuck anyone who held me accountable, because I didn't change who I was.

Hell, if that's Hugo's crime, then why the fuck isn't Arnel Pineda suffering the same public ridicule at the hands of Schon too? Oh...just because he's singing for Journey and Hugo isnt? Studid if you ask me. Especially given the short supply of Perry style singers out there that can do the trick...and the fact that Journey goes through singers like water!!!

If this is the impetus behind Schon's attacks on him, it's fucking chidish. Like I said, I agree with Andrew in that I feel there's more here than what's already said...

Yeah, but there's a few L words that prevent Neal from throwing a tantrum about it...Legacy, Literacy and most significantly, Legitimacy!!!

I'd love to see Neal throw a hissy about anything Perry does with music he co-wrote while in Journey. Just when I was about to lay off the guy....

...if he started vag-flapping about Perry's activity, I'd eat the fucker for breakfast!!

Journey would start another Asian tour. :)

Seriously, they'd have a fit. He can tour and do "their" songs but he can't get on stage with them? (Not that they would take him back now anyway).

Can only think of Wings doing Beatles stuff while the other guys were all alive. They should've gone down to SNL that one night though (McCartney was hangin' with Lennon watchin SNL and Harrison was the guest.)

A couple of years ago you had TWO versions of LA Guns touring (one with Phil Lewis
and one with Tracii Guns), both doing LA Guns material. You also had Ratt touring w/Corabi and Jizzy Pearl singing
while Stephen Pearcy was fronting his own band, Ratt Bastards, both doing the Ratt hits.

And more recently, Fuel got a new singer/bass player, recorded an awful album and toured...
And Brent Scallions got together w/origianl Fuel bassist Jeff Ambercrombie, formed Re-Fueled
and they are touring clubs doing all the Fuel hits

I guess this kind of lunacy happens more than we think :)

Arnel is the future of Journey. No more changes or its done. After watching the new DVD today I'm convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt there is nothing better out there for Journey today.
As for Hugo, there is nothing wrong with portraying an image or likeness and sounding like SP or Journey....that's not the issue. That's what tribute bands do. What's fucked up and wrong is using Journey's trademarks as though they were his own and trying to bamboozle people. That's pure fraud and if I were Neal I'd be pissed too. If it escalates Hugo will get his ass handed to him in court. In that case the stupid fuck deserves it as he shoulda known better.

Personally, I think you have to be mentally retarded or deaf in one hear to think Hugo has a good voice.

Maybe on his own stuff....but for Journey? Sounds way to thin. When you are trying to cover the best singer ever, you gotta have pipes. Some people don't like Arnel, I can dig it...but he has something hugo doesn't....Power.

I can see Schons point but I don't think he has anything to worry about. Hugo looks like Perry...unless Arnel gets plastic surgery, nobody will mistake them.

Then again..going by Melodicrock.com, Journey does have dumbass fans.
