JY's Latest Radio Show Interview!

Postby KWH17 » Tue Nov 17, 2009 8:26 am

I had heard JY was going to be doing an interview on MGK [Philly Radio Station] while riding in my car, but while I caught the promo, I missed the show. Still, MGK has the interview available on their website here: http://www.wmgk.com/Audio/tabid/209/art ... rview.aspx

I like JY in this interview. The questions are pretty much out of the typical so with no mention of Dennis JY stayed happy, and he seemed to really enjoy himself with this one. They cover Styx getting their songs on Rock Band, the old days, and the potential for new material. Keep an ear out for JY's "Blindsided"

Not to spoil the interview, but I must say that I like to hear that they want to work on new stuff and possibly are; their method of getting it to us is as predicted in previous threads-installments of one or two at a time. After two or three years of that, one could just burn a cohesive album.

That's all I'll say, enjoy the interview, and discuss!

If you could care less, why even bother posting?

If you truly didn't care, you'd read my post, go "whatever" and hit the back button. So even if it's a very small amount, you care enough to make it KNOWN you don't care.

The interview is not too long and it's very obvious JY is comfortable with the guy asking the questions. He takes a sideways swipe at Gowan in the interview that I didn't think was necessary, but definitely a good interview. I was disappointed that he said they were watching Foreigner's success or lack there of at WalMart to base their next move on.

I don't keep up on Foreigner, so are they really doing as bad as you suggest?

I don't keep up with Foreigner either. I just don't like Styx taking their cues from another band. I wish they would do what they think is in their best interest and have the material to back it up.

Comparing their Wal-Mart exclusive success with Journey, they are doing terrible. They are out of the Hot 200 Album chart after only a few weeks. While Journey's album is close to double platinum, it looks like Foreigner's package won't even hit gold (which to me is disappointing, but as CD sales are eroding so quickly with the advent of digital downloads, not totally unexpected).

actually the Foreigner CD is not bad. 1 cd of new material, 1 cd of remixed songs and a DVD of a live show for $10.

The album broke fairly well and tailed off as would be exxpected.

JY is referring to Foreigner as another classic rock band to see how the album was recieved, likely nothing else.

It was a good interview. And it was good to hear that JY is finally talking about new music whether it is singles or cd oriented we will have to wait and see.

Wal-Mart's got to want to do business with you. Def Leppard has been hoping for a deal but no luck so far. These are loss leader products so you've got to have something to really sell to Sam's board when you pitch why you should be the store's next exclusive. The Royalty rate Wal-Mart is giving the artists is tremendous, with the bands getting something like seven dollars a package.

My understanding is that, considering the situation, Foreigner did not do too badly.

Let's remember, more than 10 years with no new album, and a brand new line-up with all new members (except for one), especially the main voice.

Journey is more of an exception to the main "rule", as I see it. They lucked out with this resurgence of their music (mainly due to Don't Stop Believin') & the hype of how they found Arnel. THAT is why I think they did so well.

As long as new material is being produced, I don't think it will matter if it's part of an album or not. At least if it's good material, it will be worthwhile to have in whatever format they may decide to release it in.

Sorry but I have to call you out on this one.

As of now (11:30 PM, EST) the album is 112 on the Hot 200 Chart & 45 on the Rock Albums chart.

I thought it had fallen completely off, my bad. Still, 112 after only six weeks doesn't sound majorly successful to me. But, again I'm comparing it to Journey so its not exactly a fair comparison.
My point is, I think the window is closing for these types of bands. I believe they had a a little renaissance period but the that time is ending as far as commercial success in the CD market.

I think doing individual releases on Amazon Music and Itunes is going to be the only way more and more music gets out there in the very near future.

JY's cut on Larry sounding like Carmen doing Come Sail Away was funny. A good laugh to start the day.

JY made sense to me.

Foreigner were contemporaries fo STYX. To see how a reduced price multimedia package is doing at Walmart is music marketing 101.

First and foremost, STYX is a business.

That being said, I would still rather get an album of all new material as opposed to a single download from Itunes.

I feel like the price would be critical for Styx.

The best thing they can hope for would be many people from "their era", stumbling upon the album and saying, "HEY! Styx. I remember them. They have something new out? It's only $10. I'll get it!"

Although, I must say I hope something comes out before June. I'm a college radio major, and while it may not be the biggest of shows, I'd gladly give new Styx some kind of radio airplay. (For what it's worth)

Just listened to this. The host is right everyone is just downloading singles instead of the entire album. Hopefully within the next year we'll see something new, yes I would like a new album but singles would work to. At least we know that they are still writing. I wonder what blindsighted will be about?
