The songs meaning has not changed much since it was first released. Singling out that one line is a bit much, but I can contest your argument. Humans are humans, and we are all capable of the same actions, brought about by the same feelings. What makes us different is our circumstances, but even these differences don't stop us from empathizing with someone. Just the fact that we can put ourselves in someone elses shoes when we have not experienced the same thing directly is proof of how 'same' we are. If you are referring to terrorists in your post, and you can't empathize with a terrorist, then think about it this way. Their radical agenda, based upon their own warped principles is no different than the European Crusaders, or the Imperialists. Through terrible violence whole countries were brought under control, and while the warfare is different, the objective is the same. If you need a more modern example than the Crusaders, then what about good ol' American gangs?
Now I do not condone what terrorists or gangs have done, and although they may disgust me, they do not go against DDY's line, or song.
