After this summer Styx is done...

Postby Toph » Sat Jan 23, 2010 12:33 am

After seeing the NAMM tape and hearing Tommy Shaw in that interview, I think it is clear that Styx will do a tour this summer and then (thankfully) go away for a while. Tommy has not one, but two project going on outside of Styx - Influence 2 and now the Bluegrass album (not to mention any DY reunion discussions). My bet is that he will become more and more involved in those and less involved with Styx. There will be a Styx tour this summer (one of those oh so stale package tours) and then Tommy will focus his energies on his solo career. So, where does that leave Styx?...in the toilet. JY has no viable options if Tommy focuses more on his solo stuff. LG will go back to Canada and do another solo album and tour (which he has been hinting at for a while), Todd will do his session stuff or hook back up with Brian Wilson and well Ricky...who cares...he will craw back into his cave for a while.

So, see Styx now if you can stomach hearing the same 9 songs that exclude most of their big hits...because after this summer it may be awhile....

Even those of us that like this version of Styx will not have a problem with them taking a year or two off.

Not agreeing with you, Toph. I think there will be many more of these package tours to come. These tours do very well as do the groups who participate. Tommy is NOT going to walk away from the easy money.

His side projects can be worked in with down time (as now).

As long as the money is offered, the dinosaurs will go out to collect it. (I include Dennis in this as well. He has always said he likes to sing for his supper.)

Sorry, can't see that happening.. Styx still draws, and he lives for playing live. Shaw Blades and his Bluegrass CD are side projects, I can't see them replacing Styx has his main source of income.

Keep dreaming Toph :P

You do remember toph that tommy did the shaw blades tour while touring with styx right? I'm sure he'd be able to squeeze all that he can in the short down time he has. Just hoping if he does the shaw blades again that he doesn't get sick again. Would like to see a shaw blades show just for the hell of it.

Shaw Blades is a one off request by a promoter or at best a one month tour of 10-15 dates every couple of years. Damn Yankees will likely be a co-headlining tour with ted opening and Styx/Damn Yankees co headling (This would put Styx as closer).

Styx will still do the triple bill shed summer tours because it has been a successful format for them - even with the cheaper ticket prices last year, they did the biggest production in years and still made a good chunk of money. Evening with... shows will still be the weekend warrior shows during non peak times.

Nope, they are no more done than any other band of their generation that continues to bring it non stop for years on end...

damn yankees was never a true headline(always a co headline) ans shaw blades in a club act at best
so why would tommy stop doing summer runs where they get atleast 50,000 a night to play clubs for 20,000
as for solo i dont think he ever had a gold record.
even though i dont like the triple bill shows because of shorter sets, they will contine until us geezers quit going

I have to agree with the majority here. As excited as I am to see Tommy do this bluegrass project, and as much as I enjoyed the Shaw Blades show that I saw, Styx is what Tommy Shaw does for a living and there's no chance the combined income from his other projects could come close to replacing it. And so it will continue as long as it possibly can. It's a great gig that meets everyone's needs. What's wrong with that? Only an idiot would turn down a hundred guaranteed dates a year. Tommy's no idiot.

+1 to "Styx = Cash Cow" for its members (salaried or full member ...)

Even if they do "limited" touring this year and keep it to the summer along with a selection of dates in the spring/fall, Styx is too lucrative of a venture to put it on ice for a year or two. Even though we joke sometimes about package tours and how much they have played over the past 10 or so years, the fact is, they can still do it. They still draw to some degree. Maybe not 1980 - 1983 huge, but it's not like they're playing the bar down the street (neither is Dennis for that matter).

Yep, it’s a cash cow that just keeps on giving. Nostalgia sells and it always will.
But too many of these bands over saturate the touring market with one or two original members year after year.
I think it would be a good idea to at least take a year or two off, and then come back with Mr. DeYoung in a few years for a final farewell but that probably won’t be happening.
I would much rather see a Damn Yankee’s show than a Styx show at this very moment.

Like any successful rock and roll band, '$tyx Inc" is a business. Despite sagging recent studio album sales I do believe that the amount of touring $tyx has done over the past 10+ years, + back catalog albums sales +merchandising has put enough bread on the table to sustain life for all involved for a year or two.

I don't foresee food stamps coming into the picture for those involved.
Mr. Shaw can go out, do the solo thing, collaborate with Mr. Blades on Influence 2 or 3, and then begin a full blown reunion with Ted/Jack/Michael.

That's not true. I saw Damn Yankees in large arena on the tour supporting their Don't Tread album. Jackyl opened. You couldn't call Jackyl a co-headliner by any stretch of the imagination.

Jackyl are a band that had some 'hit' song that featured a chainsaw being used as an 'instrument'...and they did a very short set...which is good cuz I thought they sucked.

And, he's right - I saw them with Dayle in Sacramento and DY headlined. Lotsa fun...Dayle got a pick and I almost caught Tommy's (or Nuge's) hat...don't remember who tossed it.

Ah, such good memories...back when these forums were actually fun....and DDY fans could put up with Tommy'ish fans for a week in their house, and take them to a DY concert. Ah, well, guess the hatred is better suited for some people.
