What makes someone irreplaceable?

Postby chowhall » Sun Feb 21, 2010 1:08 am

When Todd replaced JP, there wasn't any backlash. When Ronny Woods joined the Stones, no real backlash. New Drum and Bass player for the Who hasn't really lead any one not to call it The Who. There haven't been that many lead guitarists that have been replaced. Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple is not a great example because they have had so many personnel changes.

If you replace the whole group like Axl did with GnR or Jeff Lynne did with ELO, there is some backlash. But as a whole, if you mess with the singers in any way, stand back. Are singers the only irreplaceable members of a band?

I will say it again if the guy dies or quits he can be replaced If a band like Styx or The Little River Band or even Van Halen with Roth replace and keep the same name they are follin the world

Styx is not Styx its Shaw and Young using the name.
I hear Little River band comercials and its not even the same singer what a farce
I would hate to go all they way to see that show and have a different band on stage I would want my money back.

I wouldn't say singers so much as frontmen are irreplaceable. If you're writing and production is the driving force behind the band (and yeah if you introduce the songs and sing most of them in concert) you are pretty impossible to replace in the band and still call it the same name.
Witness:
Pink Floyd without Roger Waters (the Styx & Journey fan division are a far cry from what Pink Floyd fans went through in the 80s, and still go through now!)
Journey without Steve Perry
Styx without Dennis Deyoung

These would be the same as if U2 tried to function without Bono, The Who tried to function without Pete Townsend, The Police tried to function without Sting, etc.

Sure, The Edge is popular, Andy Summers is popular, and Roger Daltry is popular - but would it really be the same band?

Hence - the fallacy of new Styx.

I do think it depends on how high the profile is of the one being replaced. And fan loyalty to that person, or persons.

But certainly every case is different. Styx and Journey had signature sounds with their respective "voices." Ditto a number of groups, and replacing them is difficult to impossible.

Secondary members, even ones as well-known as Keith Moon and John Entwistle, are somewhat easier to replace, though live, it changes the visual dynamic.

And, of course, the circumstances under which a person was replaced makes a tremendous amount of difference. Journey and Styx fans know this all too well. 8)

OK.
I think if your band is Van Halen or Santana, you are not replacable.
If Styx was not Styx but DeYoung, not replacable.
But if you go by a band name, anyone is replacable.
You may or may not like it.
They may or may not be better.
But anyone is replacable.

Not to go into the Styx mess too much, but if Tommy and Dennis went on tour without JY, there would be minimal if any backlash. I think if Journey went on tour with a Steve Perry (who could sing) and without Neal Schon, the average fan would not care that much. A different guitar solo would not upset fans as much as a different voice IMO. I also agree about Eddie VH, he may be the only lead guitarist that would create controversy by being replaced.

Exactly. IT's a BAND. The fans either accept it, or not...it's their choice.

What about Aerosmith and what they are going through now.

Eddie Van Halen would be difficult to replace seeing the band ia actually named after him.

Stephen Housden owns the legal right to the name and can therefore perform with anybody he chooses and call it LRB. it doesn't matter what you think. It's no different then Styx or Journey. Get over it.

And, when the original three singers DID get together, Housden sued them because on their CD cover and andvertisements "Little River Band" appeared in too large of letters. i would expect Styx to be able to do the same to Dennis if he did something like

Dennis DeYoung
Former lead singer of
Styx

Again, there are legal papers signed that tell the people involved how they can use the name...the fans don't have much say...even over-zealous and ignorant ones like you.

Cheap Trick had two other bass players, Pete Comita and Jon Brandt. With Brandt, they had some good successes.

Seems to me there was another musician who sued his former bandmates...Guess "asshole" wasn't too strong of a word when I used to describe that action.

and I would never spend 1 cent to see his farse of a band.

Don't care what you think of it.

Legal schmegal you are an average follower with no balls .

So, understanding the selfishness of protecting someones legal rights to a brandname that has become their income makes me a 'follower'.

If you think it's right to fool people just to take there money than you are a bigger fool.

LOL...like I said, you don't know what you are talking about. On one side you have the original singers 'fooling' the public by presenting themselves as LRB...and I would assume you would be OK with Dennis doing the same. And, that's OK...even tho they are NOT LRB, and Dennis is NOT Styx. But, Styx, Journey, LRB, and almost every other band from your youth are 'fooling' people by using the bands music during promotions....music performed by members who are no longer in the band...And, those promotions are most likely put together by radio, or a venue, and were not even run by the band. You are the fool making a big deal about foolish things Most of the world just doesn't care.

Go see Creedance Clearwater Revisted

Not interested...even if John Fogerty would join back up with them. And, what's the problem here? They are not even using the CCR name.

and Fake Styx

No, I will not see a DDY concert that is making a half-ass attempt at being Styx.

Now, the REAL Styx, of course I would see them.

and fake Journey

I did and I thnk Arnel is WAY over rated...just as JSS was. I would see them again, but I won't go out of my way to, or spend more then $50/ticket.

and Fake LRB its all legal.

After they dumped Steve Wade (who is a fantastic singer, BTW), I really haven't had much interest in them. And, I would have LOVED to see BSG...too bad they didn't tour the US.

The bottom line is it's the music that matters to me....not all of the bullshit politics that you let affect your fandom.
