i dont think it wud have made that much of a difference to be honest. I think by KOD, Toto was well and truly Steve L's baby. Steve P's input to Toto was minimal at best cause Paich wrote all the songs.

Kingdom of Desire was actually a Toto BAND baby, as evidenced not only by the songwriting credits, but also by statements from individual band members. I've read Jeff Porcaro's wife describe how proud he was of that album, and Mike Porcaro has also been on record saying that he is very fond of it and the way it was written and recorded.

Steve Porcaro's gripe in a 1994 interview - I think with the Toto Legend - was that Lukather handled all lead vocals and made it hard to distinguish between his solo thing and Toto.
