Mixed message from Gowan on going solo again...

Postby blt man » Thu Apr 01, 2010 11:40 am

He's performing two shows -- May 7 and 8 -- at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls. He's also contemplating a full Canadian tour and writing new tunes as Gowan, but he says his first instinct is to offer his songs to Styx.

"I love being in Styx and I absolutely love revisiting these (Gowan) songs," he says. "If you want me to tell the universe my plans, which makes it always laugh back at you, my plan is yes, I want to tour, but I don't know if it's possible. We'll see. I'm positively ready to do the big '80s unapologetic rock show again!"

Go for it dude. Likely could earn some good coin doing it solo.

i love gowan and i think he has done a good job in styx but at the end of the day i doubt that gowan is the reason folks in america buy a ticket for a styx show......while i have always tried to accept him as the "replacement" he was never the reason I went to see them and if he left tomorrow it would have no bearing on me buying a ticket in the future.

so i guess what I am saying is that he's the worst thing you could be; irrelavant

i'm just being honest.....same thing with glen burtnik......i was all about him while he took part in styx and now other than a handful of songs I dont really do anything to keep up with him nor do i miss him being in styx. to me styx was and will always be Dennis, Tommy, JY, Chuck and John.

I'm not against them having replacements and touring because that is what they love to do but whoever is in the fold playing the part of one of the originals does not matter to me if they stay or go. the only exception at this point would be Todd because he came in due to the illness of John with Chuck's blessing and obvioulsy with the passing of John then Todd becomes the "permanent" guy.....so that one is different to me.

Styx won't get off their asses and record a new album. Gowan's doing the right thing here.
At least someone in the organization wants to actually CREATE.

Man, I cannot believe that they haven't and aren't planning on doing anything new.
Until there's NEW Styx music, no more shows for me.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

i would like new music as well but they wont play much of it live anyway so what I would like to see is them make significant changes to the setlist.

if they dont want to do too much DDY stuff then retire Lady, Grand Illusion and Loreli for a while and replace them with best of times, rockin the paradise and queen of spades or something.

i also think they should retire miss america for a while and replace it with great white hope.

it's also time to pull out full versions of borrowed time, mademoiselle and something a little more obscure like shooz....or hell go back and pull out a JY wooden nickel days song of some kind. just make some significant changes and it would make thigns more interesting for repeat attenders.

I really do not think these are mixed messages. He just saying he is conflicted. He is not even thinking about leaving Styx based on this interview.

I think they found the best replacement they could for Dennis. He is still a replacement though.

I always went to see Styx when they came through we Dennis was in the band and then when Glen was in the band, but since Glen left I have only seen a few shows. I think it has more to do with the lack of new material.

And for the criticism that they do not play much of the new material that is just a flat out inaccuracy. When Cyclo had just come out they have an 80-minute set and the played 4 new songs. That is a good representation. DDY does not play that much of the new record. True they are all out of the set now, but they worked Brave New World and Cyclorama pretty thoroughly.

Best Case Scenario.

Styx takes like 18 months off after this summer. Writes and records a new original Styx record and comes back in the Fall of 2012 and does theaters and really works the new material before joining up with other acts for the typical summer packages. Have Glen help write some of the material.

During that process...

Tommy makes and tours a Damn Yankees record.

JY spends time with family.

Todd can do session work and tour with Brian Wilson

Gowan can tour Canada and make a solo record

Ricky can do another one of his projects.

Good Catches Up is a pretty good album. I listen to his Au Quebec live album a lot, it is just him and a piano, it really showcases how good of a musician he is.

No one else here probably remembers but when Gowan joined Styx, he was in the middle of working on a solo album and I believe it was half done. Styx seems to be slowing down a tad, and this is the first time in nearly 10 years he's had a chance to revisit his solo career outside of the odd date in Canada.

Most artists would rather do new material, but Styx is a cash cow. Period. Gowan won't bite the hands that feed him.

You know Froy, i can understand a little where you are coming from.Because that is how i felt about Journey & Steve Perry. But i could care less any more.Because when i want to hear them i just get the CD out.I think he is much better off without them. Now if only he would put out a new CD.lolol But as for Gowan, he is out there busting his ass for the band & people love him.
