FOLKS ON THIS BOARD AREN'T THE TARGET MARKET FOR EITHER DENNIS or STYX!

That's right. In political terms, you are the "hard support" - you'll go see them regardless of what they play. So, both touring versions of the band are clearly targeting the "casual" fan. Dennis plays 14 out of the 16 greatest hits plus RTP (top 10 rock hit) and Desert Moon (top 10 solo hit). Styx has actually increased the number of things they play off greatest hits (10 out of 16). You get more of the hits with Dennis, but Styx clearly is also on the same train in trying to give the casual fans the bigger songs. Which means there really is an open market space for the hard core Styx fan that wants to hear the rarities. You cannot go see any incarnation of Styx right now and hear Crystal Ball, Light Up, Mademoisselle, Great White Hope, Sing For the Day, Man In The Wilderness, Castle Walls, Pieces of Eight, Queen of Spades, Snowblind, Lights, Boat On the River, anything off Edge except for SMTW, One with Everything, Walrus, etc.

In other words, they both appreciate your support, but don't expect any "rarities" any time soon.

Why couldn't we hear any incarnation of Styx do Crystal Ball? It's on the greatest hits CD.

And quite a few of us have said this for years. Die hards don't sell the majority of seats. It's people wanting to hear songs they know and have a good time out. That's it. For example, they want to hug their shmoopie at Dennis shows when he does "Babe". For everyone who hates that tune, I can tell you there are just as many out there who do. It gets the same reaction every time at his show. Similarly, at a Styx (and now Dennis) show, they want to got on their feet to "Renegade", etc. It's not rocket science.

It wasn't a hit. It was popular in the live shows, but it never was a hit. In fact, I don't think it was a single from that album; Mademoiselle was (and hit #36). Greatest Hits albums also include fan favorites, not just songs that charted. I think Styx will play it, but just are not now it seems.

I don't miss Light Up. Dennis has done it for 10 years and I'm OK with it getting a rest.

I guess us 'hard supporters' may be better off to see Light Up or some other Styx tribute band if we want some of the 'rarer' songs.

Styx should do a club/theater tour and play a bunch of rare songs for the diehard fans.

Pretty much. That's the schtick for a tribute band to some degree ...

I think most of the hardcore Styx fans would really like seeing/hearing the Styx Tribute band "Light Up". Besides hearing the Styx treasures live that Dennis performed, especially "Pieces of Eight" and "Castle Walls" and then hearing Styx playing "Lights" and "Crystal Ball" live, I personally also like hearing "Mademoiselle" live and this band plays all those songs live :)

They even played the whole "Grand Illusion" in it's entirety in concert.

Here's one of their setlists from last summer....

Hate to say it, but that setlist sans Mademoiselle and Prelude 12 (which Dennis had in for a few shows), is basically what (for the most part) you've gotten from Dennis or Styx, and Dennis is now doing a lot of that (except Miss America, of course).

I do think tribute bands (considering I've been in one for Rush and we're doing it again, albeit infrequently) can bring things to the table, but what I've found is most people still want the hits. For example, we tried not doing Tom Sawyer. No go. As much as people bitch, they'd bitch more if they didn't hear CSA from any lineup of Styx or Styx tribute band. It doesn't matter if you've heard it a million times.
