Styx to perform entire classic album live?

Postby Rockwriter » Fri May 21, 2010 5:05 am

I posted a brief article about this after I heard the band was taking a poll at Styxworld http://www.wewillrockyoublog.com/2010/0 ... -entirety/

Could be cool. I know several bands have done this and fan reaction is generally very positive. Maybe this is a way to shake the Styx fan base out of some doldrums?

I'd love to see Kilroy win....given the situation behind it.

What I heard a couple of months ago was the Fall run of dates was going to feature Crystal Ball and Pices of Eight. Apparently they are looking at different albums. They should just do them on the anniversary of their releases and change it up every year.

Each of those albums would only include 3 or 4 songs they haven't done for some time.

this is interesting... although the Grand Illusion and Paradise Theatre tours from a few years ago were kind of the same thing... eh, maybe not. They didn't play Superstars, Castle Walls, or Wilderness...

Hey Styx, how about you put out NEW music and play THAT???
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

And If they do Crystal Ball than they stole the idea from me.
Just look up the post about 3 months ago.

I have no interest in Gowan singing anything from any past STYX albums so there is no interest here.

Froy,
There have been many conversations on this board about playing the entire album live. It happens at virtually every major anniversary of an album.

My vote is for Cornerstone.

I would love to hear Gowan and the Boyz belt out Babe and First Time.

Not to mention that JY's Eddie may be a little dated.( damn that was bad)

I'd almost want to have them do Cornerstone just to face the "Babe" and "First Time" issues head on, but that's a waste to be honest. I would think GI or Po8 would be better choices by a mile. They already do nearly half of GI (GI, FY, CSA, MissA), so another few songs isn't a stretch. Equinox wouldn't be too hard ("Lorelei", "Light Up", "Suite Madame Blue", and "Midnight Ride" have been done in various ways over the past 10; what's learning a couple of more). CB would be more interesting to me than Equinox since it has direct TS involvement. PT was a hit, but again, like Cornerstone, they'd have to deal with songs like "The Best of Times" they've tried to avoid. I don't see Kilroy being in the running - it'd be like Cornerstone, a waste of a vote.

It doesn't matter which album eventually gets played (or more than one) - someone will have to sing Dennis' songs. Gowan doing songs from PT are out there (they've dropped them long ago ...), as are his versions of "Queen of Spades" and "Babe". I don't see JY stepping up to the plate, although JY doing a song like "Babe" would be VERY entertaining for all the wrong reasons.

Personally, I'll go see whatever show this becomes. As a fan, I'm interested.

Not too bad. It had some not so great moments (*cough* Yes I Can *cough*), but Gowan's and Glen's tunes really stand out here. I know your venom for Gowan here Froy, but in this context where he's not singing Dennis' songs, you should give it a shot. He does bring a lot to the table.

BTW, I just looked. You can only vote for GI, Po8, Cornerstone, or PT. So clearly they're OK with doing "Babe" and/or "First Time".

Look at Judas priest. British Steel just crawled back on to Billboard's album charts, maybe Styx can move some product if they do this. Steely Dan did four shows in a row at the Gibson in universal City, three nights with different albums in their entirety and the final show was an internet request gig. All kinds of ways to pull this off if they want to.

To add to the mix, Rush is doing Moving Pictures on the Time Machine tour.

I saw the Steely Dan Royal Scam, Gaucho, and Internet Request nights. All were great. Ironically, the Gaucho night did the worst so they didn't bring it back for the second leg, and kept Royal Scam which was not done as much the first leg.

But the thing is, can Styx do any better than they are now by doing a classic album? One of the main differences is SD still has Donald and Walter. Rush has had the same lineup since 1975 or so. Judas Priest has Halford back. Again, I'm all for it, but how they handle tunes they've either consciously dropped or avoided for years is going to be interesting.

Grand Illusion.

I'd go to that just for Castle Walls.

Yes I Can is a great ballad. Great lyrics in that. Have to agree that without Glenn, it wouldn't have been as good. Definitely without Gowan it wouldn't have. Gowan's tracks are good ones.

Have my tickets, seen them every tour since '88 - always a good show. But doing all of MP wasn't a big stretch; the only song they haven't done since '82 was "Camera Eye". I won't spoil anything else, but I'm curious to see with one known gem they're bringing back. If they butcher it like the shortened version of "Xanadu", not so sure I'll love it. Like Styx, Rush has had a core set for quite some time.
