I remember a few years ago when Journey did their 30th Anniversary Show and pulled out REALLY REALLY obscure stuff from their pre-Perry albums. They were Booed. Lame audiences!
That was the best part of the show for me at those gigs.
brywool wrote:Cheap Trick did that years ago where they came out and played all of Heaven Tonight, Dream Police, etc. but on different nights. It was very cool. THEIR audiences LOVED it.
CT also did smaller venues - like clubs. Styx is looking to most likely do sheds or mid-size halls. Way different.
The reason Steely Dan and Rush can get away with is is they have a larger fanbase and enough casual fans who will see it. I mean, if you know Rush, you practically know every tune on Moving Pictures. Aja? Come on. Huge, huge album. Granted, Styx had multi-platinum success between 77 and 83, but not Aja big. That album is considered an all time classic.
brywool wrote:Styx, if you wanna REALLY appeal to the hardcore fans and do something different- let's hear some live stuff from the Wooden Nickel albums. THAT would be very cool and something that is just so out of the ordinary that it'd be really interesting. Make it a series of nights in Chicago (where those tracks are more known), add some later and brand new stuff, then release a DVD of the shows.
With the Wooden Nickel stuff, nobody's heard that stuff live before so it'd be very cool. The problem with it that I see is that those are HEAVY JY vocal tracks and unfortunately, JY is not the best singer. I couldn't sit through a set of him singing those tracks. Maybe split it between Tommy, JY, and Gowan.
Quick Is the Beat of My Heart, eh?
Look, you're not saying anything a lot of us haven't over the years. They won't do it. I'm still surprised they didn't trot out some of the WN material in the past 10 years. I'm not saying do a lot of it, but without Dennis they still have a rich back catalog they are not mining for more gold. I understand why, though.
It really is a tough situation. Neither camp can truly look completely forward; they always have to look back.
