Yeah, I said that before too- IF there was an entire NEW disc of tunes, I could see doing this. Especially if it was a stipulation by the record company. But a 7 song disc with one new song that they've already been giving away? I don't get it.
How come a band like Rush can put out new stuff all the time? They were not a HUGE radio band, at least not in the league of Styx.
What the heck has happened to the music business? It SUCKS. Classic Rock radio needs to wake up and start playing new stuff by classic artists. Otherwise, they have a finite lifespan.
brywool wrote:hmm, the 'fault' I find with it is that it just makes the band stagnant. Also, it's interesting to me that they could re-release tracks that were on A&M albums in a different version. I would think that A&M would get a cut of that. I guess if they can sell more albums at a table at their shows and the money goes into their pockets then that's what they have to do, but I just think it's a MAJOR sad state of affairs.
Basically, any new band that comes out might as well just perform old songs. I'm in a cover band, I guess that makes me an 'artist' by today's standards. It's lame.

Even Rush is putting out its next single as a download, and their records don't sell anymore much, either. They do better than Styx, but they have the same three core guys they've had forever and that's easier to market. Styx is in a different place than ANY of these bands. Even with KISS, Journey and Foreigner, although each has major member changes, they have replaced the singers with sound-alikes and they have continued to play their hits. Styx replaced its most recognizable singer with someone who sings very differently, and then chose to drop the majority of their biggest hits entirely. They've permanently alienated a big chunk of what used to be their fan base by doing that, while at the same time re-invigorating a slice that maybe didn't like those songs. So they have fewer marketing options. It's just the way it is. To get a Wal Mart exclusive they'd need to go in and re-record their biggest hits, more than likely, and that would include songs that they won't touch, and songs that would not be likely to come off well in this lineup because those songs don't suit the talents and interests of this group of musicians.
Classic Rock got killed by bringing in a bunch of suits to analyze numbers. They shrank the playlists, then shrank them more, then shrank them even more, to try and hone in on the songs that bring the most ad revenue. By doing that, they made it so repetitive that it started to die. But here are two hard truths: 1) The reason they don't want to play new songs by older artists is because listeners historically respond badly to that, and 2) The reason listeners respond badly to that is because most classic bands make new records that are simply nowhere near as good as the records that made their careers. Most of them don't DESERVE airplay. It's that simple. Look at Yes, whom I've always loved . . . if radio had played 'The Ladder' would it have done better? No, because 'The Ladder' is a shitty record. If radio had played Kansas' 'Somewhere To Elsewhere' would it have done better? I don't think so. Make a record that doesn't suck, and you'll have more people willing to buy it.
You also have to factor in that the audience for these bands is in its forties and fifties now, and most people that age are just not motivated to buy new records, even if they're great (which most of them aren't). So playing live becomes king, just like live is king for aging blues artists, or aging country artists, or aging artists of any stripe. They're lucky to have any career at all. Most careers last 5 years in the music business. Styx will celebrate its fortieth anniversary of its first record in two years and is still a money-making machine. Less than in the past, perhaps, but still a hell of a lot of cash.

Ill buy a new album with Gowen writing his own songs like on Cyclo, but I have no interest in him recording Dennis' songs. NONE.
That is just plain wrong.
they're styx's songs not dennis'

WHY would this have been good??? So the fans could hear the same songs over again?? WHAT ARE THESE GUYS THINKING? At least with Cyclo, though it didn't sell hugely, it sold more than this ever will. Once a band stops creating new stuff, you might as well retire. This is way disappointing to me as a Styx fan.
[EDIT]
Sorry to whine, just bums me out that guys this talented are doing nothing new.
I agree with Toph on this one.

Wrong. The Ladder is an excellent record, actually one of my favorites from Yes, you need to get your ears checked.

you should get larry on your show...you'd probably shit your pants...better yet get jy and larry...you wouldn't even be able to get a word out of your throat
yogi wrote:I have NOT a clue but how does a song become a hit these days?
Is it based on downloads, number of tha a times 'popular' stations play that song per day/ week, station requests???
Back in the day you would purchase the 45 and at the end of the week the most 45's purchased would be your top 40.
I truly dont have a clue how it works now. Hell maybe I even had it wrong back then.
I do know that 'In Pieces' is getting some good play around here. I hope it blows that 'classic rock' lable out of the water for at least a short time.
