Windy? And then some!

Last night in Chicago was a fine example of “Man versus Mother Nature.” Guess who won?

It seemed as if the worst was over. I think I saw Kansas bus pull away, heading for Atlanta. Foreigner had just played an inspired show, the advantages of humidity evident in some of their most soaring vocals so far this tour. We were in great form too and couldn’t wait to take the stage. A friend backstage who'd been monitoring a weather channel said, "The storm has passed."

But as we made our way to the wings, preparing to make our entrance, the weather changed, droplets of water and wind, which had not been there seconds before. We all gave each other the “be careful” warning, which we do whenever the deck is going to be slippery, then headed out.

The wind was at our back and that wasn’t too bad. The temperature was comfortable and for the first five songs it seemed like we were gonna be fine. A little wind blown, but we could handle that. But we all began to notice the lighting instruments on the trusses overhead and the PA on the wings. They were definitely swaying. I glanced over to my left and saw all hands on deck making sure vital electronics were protected, and made eye contact with our top production people. Thumbs up. But I saw concern. Still, thumbs up is what it is, and we kept going.

“Suite Madame Blue” was the wildest ride I think I’ve ever had on stage. The audience, who had just given us their vocal seal of approval to continue, looked as if they were part of an apocalyptic style video from the 80’s with massive wind machines tousling their hair and clothing, our hair and clothes blowing all about as well, our resolve pushed to a fever pitch. It was magnificent! Surely Ridley Scott’s massive camera boom was going to swing in at any moment for the pan across the set! It was a visceral, primal and euphoric. We had all given in to the elements and we were loving it, like when your parents allowed you to play in the rain when you were a kid. I don’t recall ever experiencing anything quite like that on stage before.

But when we started “Miss America” there was a shift in the wind. A 180 degree shift and now not only was the wind now in our faces, but there was a temperature drop that felt all of 20 degrees! And we could see this massive wall of dark clouds approaching the amphitheater from behind the stands. The rain had picked back up.

I looked at the fans and they were clearly being put to a test we had no intention of asking them to endure. And now the PA was twisting to the point where it was lifting our guys off the ground and the speakers were actually facing us on stage.

This time when I looked to our tour manager and head of production for the entire show, I was pretty sure one of them giving me the “That’s it” sign, the flat hand, palm down, waving back and forth below the chin. I checked once more and now both hands were crisscrossing waist high, mouthing the word “STOP!” Then he was waving us off the stage. It was over.

We finished “Miss America” and I let the audience know that we had been instructed that we had to say good night because conditions had become severe to continue.

This is the last thing we set out to do, calling a show off due to weather. But every once in a while the right thing to do is give in to the forces of nature. The Windy City sure lived up to its reputation and we tip our hats to the Chicago fans for hanging in there with us as long as they did.

To everyone who was there last night, we’ll have a wild and wooly experience to remember for the rest of our days. Your commitment was inspiring to us all.

Thank you for understanding it was time to call it a day.

We love Chicago and we will be back!

Perfect example of why I hate outdoor concerts.

Does anyone else spend the time between buying kick-ass tickets and the day of the outdoor event stewing over the forecast? The last ten days are torturous as the forecast changes daily. I hate it! :x
