The three band canundrum

Postby styxfanNH » Tue Jun 22, 2010 8:57 am

For the last umpteen years, Styx has been touring with 2 other bands during the summer tour. They've played with Journey, REO, Pat Benetar, Kansas, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Nelson, Def Lepard (Which I still think was an odd pairing) and I am sure I missed some others.

Reality is that none of these bands can perform to a full audience of 18,000 on a solo summer tour with a minor support act. Most bands of their age are in the same boat, and have to team up with someone to play any type of sizeable venue.

At this moment, it is the long term rockers that continue the never ending tour that are providing at least the opportunity to hear live music. Most of the current generations' bands have cancelled their tours or decided not to go out in the first place.

What is interesting is that there are some bands that do not have to do this. Take Tom Petty for example. He also is getting record deals with major labels as well. I would put Styx and Petty on the same level in popularity. So the question is what has and what is Petty doing differently that gives him the ability to do so?

he doesn't tour as much then there is bigger draws for his concerts...if styx didn't tour so much they would too...they love to play and people are still going to see them so there's no problem

I can see that. But what is really inteesting is that major labels are still interested in releasing new material from Petty. I may be wrong but, I don't think any of that is really being played on radio or charting.

Hey now to be fair, 2008 was just Styx/Boston. No third band.

The mix or the playing? I thought the rhythm section was pretty good. Kimberly perfected those signature Boston bass lines. Jeff wasn't great, but he definitely wasn't awful. Just a standard rock drummer I suppose.

she's a really weak bass player and he was a really weak drummer with fuck ups all over the place dragging behind the beat...just terrible...but i guess most things would suck after having just heard ricky and todd playing but BOSTON can get anyone in the world to play for them pretty well and they chose those two...maybe she's blowing tom or something

it's just a business decision. promoters are willing to pay the bands more money in a package deal because they know they will sell more tickets.

i like tom petty and always have but styx to me is in a different category but probably to others they would be the same or maybe tom would be more popular.

styx had a huge run in the late 70's and early 80's and then had a hit again in the 90's where as tom stayed consistent in his popularity from the early 80's throughout th emid 90's and beyond.....so from a marketign standpoint he may be a more popular option to promoters and record companies but it will interesting to see how his new album sells and the tour does.

.....And then they broke up. Tom Petty kept putting out music.

I've always wondered how much more popular Styx would be today if they had stayed together and Tommy hadn't left after Kilroy.
If they had put out an album every couple of years in the 80's, say one in 85, and one in 87 or 88. They could have taken full advantage of the MTV years. I love Dennis, but I wish he had just let go of the concept idea to keep the band together. A straight up rock album in 1985 would have went through the roof. Look at bands like Heart and Dire Straits. They put out albums in the mid 80's and had several videos on MTV and their albums sold millions of copies. Styx could have easily done the same and had that monster album that sold 5 or 6 millions copies if they had 3 or 4 good songs with good videos. I know what Dennis was trying to do with Kilroy, but it backfired.
I guess we will never know.

and it was a great one except for boston's rhythm section..shit bass and drums

The mix or the playing? I thought the rhythm section was pretty good. Kimberly perfected those signature Boston bass lines. Jeff wasn't great, but he definitely wasn't awful. Just a standard rock drummer I suppose.

she's a really weak bass player and he was a really weak drummer with fuck ups all over the place dragging behind the beat...just terrible...but i guess most things would suck after having just heard ricky and todd playing but BOSTON can get anyone in the world to play for them pretty well and they chose those two...maybe she's blowing tom or something

  I like them both.

sure she is good to look at but kimberly could not play bass out of a wet paper bag

Well i guess she is pretty i am not into women.I did not think she was that bad.But guess i don't know anything about music.

exactly

Petty has been true to himself and his fans for over what, 30 years? Petty has been Petty from day 1. He's still jamming with Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell and a few other original guys. No gimmicks with him, just rock. Look at Bon Jovi. Same thing. They're not on package tours with three bands and a combined 7 original members. And what are they filling this summer in the US? Football stadiums, and no, it's not selling well because Kid Rock is opening. He only draws about 500 fans a show.

I think it's ego. Some of those bands don't want to accept the fact they are has-beens and should just start playing festivals. My buddy and I were actually talking about this on the way home from Night Ranger tonight. How many appealing Styx/Foreigner/Kansas type tours can really be that exciting as time passes?
