Which is more likely

Postby Keiferb » Sat Jul 17, 2010 11:03 am

I've read posts on this board for a while. Finally established a logon.

Being a huge fan of Pink Floyd, Styx, and Supertramp.....

David Gilmour joining Roger Waters on stage (as Pink Floyd, not a special guest appearance or in support of some cause).
DDY being accepted back into the fold.
Roger Hodgson joining Rick Davies.

They've officially said that since Rick is dead, PF will never exist again. But DG will be joining RW for at least one show, so there is thawing. I don't think you'll see much more, but it'd be nice to see less animosity out of that camp.

I really don't think DDY will be back.

Actually, you are incorrect on that. This year's tour is off vs. prior years. Whether that is indicative of the economy or people just being burned out on Styx, the numbers are way off. Please don't post random opinions posed as facts.

I don't know about what is more likely, but I do believe DeYoung back in Styx would rank as least likely.

Agree, ask JY or TS if the well will ever run dry, I'm sure they would have a different answer. The shows they are doing are triple bill shows so I doubt everyone one is coming just because Styx is on the bill. In order to prove your point you would have to have data from shows were Styx was the only act on the bill. I would like to see these numbers you are talking about.

I think Dennis with Styx is the most likely thing to happen out of all three of them. Roger and David will always do charities together but if were talking a project as Pink Floyd, never.

Supertramp might happen but the shit Rick just pulled by not inviting Roger on this anniversary tour really set the idea of a reunion back quite a bit. When Roger asked if he could participate in a few of the shows, he was out told by no, it will never happen. So I think that settles that. Since they agreed 27 years when Roger left not to play each others songs in concert, does anyone know if this is still the case?

Take a look at my "Hey Styx, take a hint" thread. He had nothing constructive to add and simply told me to "fuck off." He says outrageous things and then just calls people dumb when they question the validity of such statements. I think you're incorrect in saying that he has just as much right to be here.

Couple of interesting insights (aside from the bickering). While I don't count on any of them happening, mainly for the reasons cited, I would have thought DDY maybe had a snowballs chance of getting back into the band - if for no other reason, he's basically begged for it off and on. I'd also think the rest of the band would tire of having what amounts to a fragmented fan base, the continuous touring of small venues, and with sharing the bill with other has-been acts.

When I think about these 3 bands - it's really quite sad when you think that all 3 parallel each other in some ways - The lost opportunities of the past 25 years or so. All of them had their formal "splits" in the early 80's. I'm choosing to ignore the fact that Styx did indeed reunite in the 90's -but aside from RTP, it was never really complete, w/Edge w/out TS, and w/BNW being such a disjointed, fractured event. Think about it - All 3 bands lost out on the opportunity to further cement their legacy. Ok, they continue to make a living - I doubt that any of them are broke. However, the FANS of all 3 bands lost out. They all ended up being divided (I think the Styx division and associated venom rivals that of Pink Floyd).

Even more unfortunate, for me, is I never got to see any of them in what I would call their original, or "hey day" configuration. I saw the EOTC tour twice in Philly (once in what had to have been the hottest night in history in the Tower Theater). No Shaw. I saw Supertramp in support of the "Some Things Never Change" tour (probably one of the best shows I've ever been to in terms of quality, but no Hodgson). Never got to see Floyd pre or post Waters. Sore subject w/me, since they are by far my favorite band. Oddly enough, I happen to think Delicate Sound of Thunder, and Division Bell, stand up mighty fine. OK, not Dark Side, or Wish You Were Here, but terrific nonetheless. Last time Floyd toured was '94, the year I got married. Had no extra $, and told my wife we'd catch them next time (that's right, there was no next time). I think Gilmour's Live in Gdansk set (his On an Island tour + PF classics, all w/Richard Wright) may be the best album I own. Yet I digress. Sorry for the tangent - this is a Styx board after all.

Point is - If I had to bet on one of them, I would have picked Styx as well. Again, it's a shame, and a little maddening. I have their entire catalogue, and when I listen to them, and how good they were "TOGETHER" (they really did complement each other, with their harmonies, and the varying styles each brought to the table). I just listened to Grand Illusion today for the first time in a while, and man, they were really "ON" when they made that record. Anyway, it's really quite befuddling to me that the division(s) have lasted so long. Frankly, in some ways, I think DDY sees the same thing, and may be one of the reasons he hasn't seemed to completely shut the door on his mates. I'm sure this will illicit some feedback.

Do not assume I am a blind DDY supporter, and a Gowan hater. I am not. Do I wish Gowan were there? No. But I don't blame him, nor the band for making a living. I choose to believe both sides are at fault, going back to '79/'80, when the crack started to become more pronounced. I've always felt it takes 2 to tango. Save your venom for those looking to pick a fight and divide the camps further.

I guess there's a little bit of light here.

From Roger's facebook page:

So here's what happened. Last year, 'The Hoping Foundation' a charity that supports Palestinian refugee kids, (www.hopingfoundation.org) put on a fund raiser at Ronnie Scott's Club in London, the idea of which was to raise money by auctioning karaoke performances by various celebrities. David was there as a supporter and was moved to perform an impromptu rendition of George Gershwin's 'Summertime?' which he performed aided and abetted by supermodel Kate Moss.

In the wake of that evening, someone, I think it was David himself, came up with this 'Wouldn't it be funny', idea. What if he (David that is) were to sing the old Teddy Bears song 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' with me (Roger that is), what with us having been so famously at each other's throats for years and years. Get it!!!! Anyway he E-mailed me with this suggestion and I loved it, so then it was just a question of juggling dates and deciding to do 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Comfortably Numb' to round out our little set. Or so I thought, until he sent me a number of very musical and eloquent demos of how we could do the song in two-part harmony. I listened with a sinking heart, knowing that David, with his superior vocal skills, could sing either part standing on his head, whilst I would have to search for a different key and then struggle through hours and hours of routining a performance that lay way outside my vocal comfort zone. To my eternal shame I bottled out and told Dave I would happily do 'Wish You Were Here' and 'C. Numb', but that 'To Know him is to Love him' was beyond me.

Some weeks passed with David cajoling me from time to time, telling me how easy it would be, but I clung resolutely to my fear of failure until one day he made one final entreaty. I quote "If you do 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' for The Hoping Foundation Gig, I'll come and do 'C. Numb' on one of your Wall shows". Well! You could have knocked me down with a feather. How fucking cool! I was blown away. How could I refuse such an offer. I couldn't, there was no way. Generosity trumped fear. And so explaining that I would probably be shite, but if he didn't mind I didn't, I agreed and the rest is history. We did it, and it was fucking great. End of story. Or possibly beginning.

PS. Just heard from David, he will decide in due course which gig he wants to do, it will be a surprise!
