Just to play devil's advocate, at times there has been an extra fee for a meet and greet with DDY. So, what would you call that?

LOTS of bands do this. However, I DO think it's a lame practice for them.

It was probably a good idea in the beginning to keep lame trolls like froyline out of the 'lounge' and forums. Journey had all kinda of issues with their forums and a few people wanting to do nothing but spew hatred of the band.
Nowadays there is not enough exclusive content for members, and from what I understand the forums are not very active...and since many of the shows are now general admission without reserved seating, joining the fan club is a bit senseless. You just don't get your money's worth for your $30.
They could spice it up with more special content. Maybe live chats with members of the band. Add some type of special gift to fan club members who buy tickets through the website...so it is worth something even if the concert is GA.
I don't think they are worried about this stuff any longer...and maybe they should just drop the fanclub and presales and open up the website for everybody...well, almost everybody.

As far as I know the only times Dennis has done this is in conjunction with the PBS pledge drives, and that's their call. But I don't know, maybe he offers packages of his own. If he does I have not heard so.

It all comes down to the extra money they can squeeze out of their most loyal fan base.
They know all to well that the blind, bathwater drinking fans will line up in droves to think that they are getting something special.
In the case of the "Stynx Lounge" I have seen where some of these loyal fans even complained about paying for their membership and basically got nothing for it. The sad fact is that those sane fans still cheer the band on or try to spin it that the band members knew nothing about it. If they actually didn't, they should have or at least their management should have. After all, what is the site representing?

That may be the case. He should have declined to do it that way. I am sure they didn't force him to do it. My feeling is that was beneath him to do that.

Suite: Too bad you don’t know what goes on behind these fundraisers. I know that some musicians do these for free to give back to the organization, they don’t even ask for airfare, sometimes just a ride to and back from the airport. Especially the PBS fundraisers. At a recent private event, people were paying a high amount to have dinner with a singer, these were corporate people with money and knowing this money is going to a charity.
Also at a recent private event that I went to, the musician also donated $10,000+

If all they wanted was the money, they wouldn't offer the seats to those who did not pay for the 'lounge'. They would never have started this free 'subscription' to the site. They would not give away the 'new song' to anybody other then 'lounge' members. What I think it truly comes down to is that it's an obsolete idea, and they know it, but they don't want to take something away for the few fans that do subscribe to it.
It's not a theory. Most of the things you mention they are doing now for free was something you had to have a paid membership to the "Stynx Lounge" to get access to. It was only after some members complained they changed to offering those things for free. They know all to well that the blind, bathwater drinking fans will line up in droves to think that they are getting something special.Monker wrote:So, you are ignorant too. I see I'm ignorant because I don't believe in paying an artist money to be part of their "special club". I would like to know the number who are currently paying the $30...cuz I bet it's a lot less then you seem to think. If people don't look into what they are paying for, it's their fault, not Styx'. And, what do you care if one of these 'most loyal fans' pays for this? is there something they are getting that you are jealous about?
So you are saying it is OK for someone to rip someone off and suffer no penalty for it? It's all the responsibility of the victim. Tell that to the people who's lively hood has been affected by the current economic climate brought on by the banking\investment institutions and the US Government. I care when it seems that someone is ripping someone off. Since some "members" of the "Stynx Lounge" seemed to feel they were taken, I just commented about it. It's not like I am a crusade about it.

When did Dennis take money for a M&G after a show? In all the years he's been solo post-Styx, he's never advertised M&G packages and such. Here's one where I'm going to call BS unless you can prove otherwise. Actually, I've never felt "raped" by ticket prices to Dennis' shows.
Both Styx and Dennis have actually had pretty reasonable ticket prices for the past 10 years in comparison to most people out there. Even the $79.50 (or whatever) it was for the Beacon show really isn't that bad. Is it more than some can afford? Absolutely. I'm not blind to that. I think that's the rub. When I first started seeing shows (Genesis in 1986), tickets were $16.50. T-shirts were about that. Now t-shirts are in the $30 - $50+ range, tickets are usually around $50 (or more), etc. The Eagles really ushered in the uber-ticket prices from a band perspective, but I remember in the 90s "ideas" like Golden Circle so you would pay more to be in a certain area. Most venues have always been tiered in terms of cost, but they basically took it to an extreme in the 90s. The artists wanted a cut of the action, so they started the VIP packages where you get a premium seat, sometimes some swag, and possibly a M&G.
Also put it in perspective: for years people tried to get passes to get backstage. Now, in a lot of cases you can buy that "privilege". The question is this: how bad do you want it? The artists, venues, management, etc. found a way to capitalize on it. I'm not defending the practice at all; I would never pay extortion rates for a chintzy t-shirt, a ticket, and a handshake. Many do happily, so there's a market for it.
