Yep... People want to hear the songs they know. But if the new stuff is good, he (they) won't lose the crowd when they play it.

I remember seeing Styx during Brave New World. They opened with "Everything Is Cool"... which I kinda liked at the time ... musically, it's a great song to start a concert with. People didn't know what to do. They launched into their second song right out of it and I forget what it was... but it was an oldie that the crowd ate up. My thing was - they should have done just the opposite... work the new material around the old, get the crowd fired up with a few lesser hits (but still known songs) and then hit them with your new stuff. It's always me assertion that you NEVER EVER EVER play a new song ballad off your latest album unless it's a hit. Otherwise - the crowd finds an excuse to check out and it's hard to get them back. Yeah it may be the best thing since Let It Be, but if the crowd doesn't know it, or if it's a miss - then the crowd is then completely lost.

People go to Styx and DeYoung shows to hear Styx music. Even Styx' short-lived experiment with Damn Yankees' songs didn't seem to last too long.

You may want to take your TS\JY goggles off, they are distorting the truth. Styx hasn't been creative for decades and show no signs of being interested in doing so. The band was the collective efforts of TS,JY and DDY as a unit, without that you have just a band riding on their past glories. Since they are on this plan of releasing one song at a time method you would think that they would be picking songs that are the very best they can do. None of these single song releases are worth writing home about. Same could be said for DDY, no matter how hard he tries, without his former band mates he is basically in the same boat. However, at least DDY has released substantial new material with some success.

By the same token, I think Styx show crowds don't really care to hear anything off Cyclorama either or Shaw's solo work. And we know for SURE they don't wanna hear any of JY's solo work.

Of course they would. He is more known for the material he did in Styx then solo. After all, most of the Styx material that got radio air play was his. Since the majority of people coming to the concerts are casual fans it makes sense. That's doesn't mean that there is no value in his solo material. The simple fact is Styx had much larger promotion and air play then any of the band members solo work. This is not anything exclusive to DDY, it's that way for a lot of artists that were part of a popular group who then went solo.
