I saw Dennis in Erie on August 20th

Postby Archetype » Sun Aug 29, 2010 5:04 am

Right up against the barricade. I felt guilty for seeing such an amazing show for free. I got a guitar pick from Jimmy Leahy and met Tom Sharpe...he's a really cool guy.

I have tons of awesome pictures and videos to upload, but I don't have time right now; here's two to hold you guys over til I get a chance to do it 8)

Nice pictures, looking forward to the others you shot. Any other suprises in the set? I hope to catch Dennis' band again soon, they are amazing.

There no longer is a "real Styx". Since the split with DDY it's just a band with the rights to the name. Neither Styx or DDY are the "real" Styx anymore. Once you start to dilute a band with replacement performers it becomes pointless. Led Zepplin knew that.

Both bands have more replacement parts than they do original components. I don't count Chuck in the Styx count because quite frankly, he only does a couple of songs and not every show. Journey is more "original" than either variation of Styx at the moment since three of the "classic" lineup are actively onstage every night, all night.

I mean, really, what is anyone expecting at this point? There are very few bands who are all original or have the same lineups they have since 197x. I don't know why in the case of Styx (or Dennis for that matter) it's a big deal.

ac/dc have gone on without malcolm before. bass isn't original, drums replaced his replacement, so did malcolm, brian isn't original. That's one constant member just like JY in Styx (and Chuck). So I guess this AC/DC band isn't the real AC/DC after all?

I'm talking in terms of Styx not any other band. That's not to say that this could apply to other bands and in other cases not. Like it or not, DDY along with TS, JY made the signature sound that was Styx. Remove any one of them and you are only going to get a band trying to recreate what they had. It's like baking a cake and forgetting a critical ingredient. It may look like a cake but it's not going to taste right.

Subtract any of the classic line up and we wouldn't even be here discussing a band called Styx. If you think that Styx would have made it to where they were with just TS and JY you are full of it. BTW, Dennis is not claiming to be Styx so your comment about his band is pointless. It he was claiming that his band was then that would be a different story all together.

You also can say we have 2 bands that are Styx.On one end you have DDY & the other with TS,JY & CP. So i believe we have the best of both worlds here. You can go see your fave band that way.

It was a strictly greatest hits set plus Desert Moon. They played Light Up at the Niagara Falls show back in June.

While what you say sounds OK in theory. Neither of them are producing what made Styx such a great band. I'm not saying what they do is worthless, it just lacks the magic that was there. IMHO this can only be achieved if the remaining line up was to reunite.

You are correct! The last time I saw all 5 of them on the same stage together was 1983. The Edge tour and 1996/97 tours were both 4 out of 5.
However, I was fortunate enough to see the fab 5 on the same stage more times than most! I lost quite a few of my ticket stubs from the 70's. Wish I still had them. People always ask me how many times I've seen Styx and I can never give an accurate number!

Dude, if 10 million people voted which version of Styx was better, you and 3 other people on this board would lose 9,999,997 to 3.

Do you seriously think so? I don't even think you were born during the 1983 tour, you only know this line-up.

Look nothing can top classic styx even though it died in '83. But if you ask me to pick one line up in the past 20 years to go see i would go with this lineup. Again imho. To each there own.
