Where the electric guitar comes in is a bit weird.
Again, the doubling effect-
Gowan sticks to the Dennis solo and does a good job. Say what you want about him, the guy's a great player.

Why would anyone listen to this over the original?
yogi wrote:Since DDY was the one who 'Styxified' this song back in 1976 they should have added the extra verse for this EP. Tommy sang the extra verse on his Girls With Guns Tour. It should have been added here.
The verse talks about picking up the 7/10 split and how good most bowling alley food is. Tommy only sings about coffee now. Back in the day he sang about food & sports.

He's a great player because he sticks to Dennis's parts ?
Anyone could copy those parts anyone.
Doesn't say much about Dennis does it?

It can say one of two things:
1. They didn't want to radically change the arrangement (which is most likely the case) to keep in the spirit of what they did with the other tracks.
2. Good, bad, or indifferent, there's a reason they stuck to the original. You may think DDY is a bad keyboard player (he's not) but to call into a question a solo done nearly 35 years ago is a bit ridiculous.
And talk to Tommy Shaw - he had a hell of a time finding someone to play those Fooling Yourself parts when he went solo in the 80s. So Dennis may not be "the best evah", but he's far from suck ass. Guys like Emerson and Wakeman may be able to outplay Dennis, but Dennis did what was right for the tunes in the limited space dictated by the arrangement.

Gowan is better. It's a fact.

DDY is a great Hammond player.
You mean Oberheim - he didn't use a Moog past Crystal Ball I believe. It may not be on there. I know it's on Equinox (the intro to Lonely Child sounds to be a Moog anyway). The OB 4-voice crept in around '76.

Name 1 signature offering from Gowan that's been played on the radio.
Then think about how many DDY has given than you can see how wrong you are.
I careless about the trained keyboard player BS its how many popular pieces have gotten the band noticed and to the mainstream.
CSA BCM Lady SMTW Babe The Intro to Miss America etc Gowan done anything like that?

Gowan IS the better keyboardist as far as playing. He can play circles around Dennis.
Now, having him come up with a signature keyboard part that stands up after 30 years... that's something else.

Maybe that's why he runs around in circles on stage, All I can say is so what he can play better but he cannot write anything.
Advantage Dennis , All that Gowan is better at is coping people so what.
That's why STYX has to regurgitate because Gowan has no creativity and can't come up with anything new,
Advantage DennisNow, having him come up with a signature keyboard part that stands up after 30 years... that's something else.
To me that's the issue here, When Gowan comes up with something new let me know.

You might as well talk to a lamp post Bry.

No, he's a great player because he is.
Regarding, his sticking to Dennis' keyboard parts....
Geez, everybody's whining because Todd isn't sticking to John's simple drum parts and he's adding his own touch to them.
Personally, I prefer Todd's drum parts, but that takes NOTHING away from John. I just prefer a more technical drummer.
If Gowan went off and put his own solos in, people would be all over him. Seriously, Gowan IS the better keyboard player. He's NOT the better singer or writer (at least for my tastes) but he is HANDS DOWN a better keyboard player than Dennis.
