As in no new songs?

That would be correct..

But it is nice to hear these songs without Denniswithabaseballbatupthearsenotthegripendmindyouvoice.

So it is a nice change for me.

On the whole, these songs just sound like they were recorded in a living room. I don't get it...

Lorelei- Keyboard sound is pretty tiny compared to the orginal (that's "tiny" not "tinny"). I'm surprised they didn't use the wanky doubler on JY as they did with Gowan. It DOES sound like he's trying to reign in the Cowardly Lion Vibrato. Thank God for that. It doesn't have the BIG sound it did on Equinox, but it's certainly played well by the band.

Fooling Yourself- Very faithful to the original. Sonically, not so much, but the band played it pretty much by the numbers. Tommy's voice sounds pretty much as it did in 1977. Do I hear AUTOTUNE being used on the harmonies? Let's hope that's just Mp3'ishness and not The AntiChrist... er I mean AutoTune. Funny that they felt the need to replace "C'mon doctor". Todd's playing is great on it as usual. Too bad the sound of his drums doesn't come through as well as it could.

Sing For the Day- Decent rendition. Not sure why they keep leaving out the middle break. Tommy's voice sounds great on it. Not that much different from the original. Other than the middle section being a bit shorter, the band again sounds like it went by the numbers.

I would like to hear this stuff on a good system though as Youtube pretty much squishes everything down. I'd give the stuff about a 6 out of 10. Decent performances, especially from Todd. These recordings are Blasphemous to some. A big "Why?" to others. I think I'm in the second camp. They certainly take nothing away from the original tracks. If I want them, I'll go listen to them... and BOY have I been listening to a LOT OF STYX lately...

I think Gowan got the short end of the deal. He'll take the most flak and I think that by recording his vocals better that could've been reduced. I know a lot of you hate Gowan here (I do not), but I think that they should've done a better job with recording his voice. On Cyclo, he sounds fine and his voice is not over processed. He's a better singer than JY and they didn't use that stuff on him, so I don't really get that.

NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Lorelei: not bad for JY version, harmonies are badly lacking
Fooling Yourself: Tommy sounds good on this and Gowan play's true to the original, but once again the harmonies are lacking
Sing For The Day: never cared for the original and don't care for this one either :?

My $.02 on a quick listen:

Lorelei sounds like the live version, which isn't bad - but it's like the sound got sucked out when everything came in. It has much more presence when it's basically just JY's voice. Outside of the mixing, this one is definitely as expected.

Fooling Yourself - Well, it's Fooling Yourself. Outside of the keyboard sounds being just a touch off, it sounds like it always has been with a touch of the live feel and bit of a step back to the studio version along with a more mature Tommy singing it. I'm only listening on my laptop speaker, but Ricky's bass tone is off. I'll have to re-evaluate with the real deal when I get it. The little bit before the keyboard solo will tick the Dennis die hards off ... no question. Ironic since he's faithful to DDY's part on this one. Hrm. The more I listen the tempo is even a bit slower than I think it should be. Is the album this version this slow?

Sing for the Day - Definitely updated a bit and not as faithful to the original. While not bad, I definitely prefer the original here. A more mature TS voice isn't flattering on the low bitrate streaming I've heard, and this is the first one where I'll openly complain about harmonies. This one just is off. By no means is it horrible, but instantly forgettable. The irony on this one is I like Gowan's keyboard work. He's paying a big compliment to DDY on these last two tunes. There are moments where they are not straight reads but derivates or different octaves.

So this batch has generally fared better, and I'm still buying it in October. I'll do a proper review then.
