From the clips I saw on YouTube, Joe wouldn't need much fixing. I mean, he didn't sound like 1986, but he sounded pretty good to my ears.

Bobby was inconsistent, but even on his good nights, he always had some pitch issues. These are okay in the moment...energy, vibe, and pure balls are more important than absolute precision at a show, but on a recording, it was a little painful at times.

Joe didn't seem to have any pitch issues at all...there were some things he couldn't hit, but that's why they hired live backup singers, and didn't really attempt to cover it up, which was a nice change. We get old, I'd so much rather see a great singer say "hey, i can't hit all these notes, but i'll do the best i can with a little (live) help" than use technology to cover it up.

Actual footage from the FIB Paris show is available on YouTube and elsewhere. They def. overdid it with the auto-tune. Also, having heard and seen the footage from the most recent tour, Joe is still not the vocalist he once was. Like I said from the beginning, they traded one vocally-compromised old tenor for another. Despite attempts by some, (most disappointingly you), to stir up a vocal pissing contest, Bobby and Joe have more in common than they don't. Both remain good singers.

For me, the difference is that Joe is simply more consistent as a singer. Stop. Yes, there are issues with him having the same range as his heydey but I find Bobby wildly all over the map in terms of pitch, screeching etc. I like Bobby and all but he's also one of the most inconsistent live vocalists that I've ever seen.

Hey, I'm a HUGE fan of both dudes. I'm just saying they are both aging tenors and you're never quite sure if they are going to hit their mark. In my opinion, the band prolly should have went with a new singer altogether. No hate here. I'm happy TOTO is back on the road. Just trying to keep it real.

Someone on the TOTO network site mentioned that Luke says they are having legal issues with it. I hope it comes out soon. Doubt I'll play FIB live ever again.

Awesome! I can't WAIT to see this show! I hope they release it on Blu Ray. Have they discussed that? Also, I wonder what the "legal issues" are? They need to hurry up and put this thing out already. :D Thanks for the info.

I'm wondering if it will be released on DVD, or with a standalone CD release.

I've watched it a few times since getting it, and it just doesn't hold a candle to Amsterdam, much like Manila doesn't hold a candle to Houston 81 or Journey 2001 on the Journey side of things. I think it's pretty much relegated to the dustbin unless I get an uncontrollable urge to hear one of the FiB album songs live...

Joe never did it for me. Even in his "heyday", his voice sounded forced, thin and with a too fast vibrato. I'm not sure why Lukather likes him so much vocally. While Bobby may have pitch issues, his voice is still part of their signature sound so I would prefer if he was still in the band. Even the FIB line up with Spinner singing lead on the one tune that Joe had done (can't recall the name right now), sounded better with his voice and intonation.

I'd take Joe singing "Can't Stop Loving You" over Spinner anyday. Spinner was an adequate replacement, but that's it. Joe in his prime was a force to be reckoned with. Just watch his version of White Sister from 1987. Just awesome. As for why Luke is so keen on him...I think becuz they all genuinely like each other. If Luke is gonna play "Hold the Line" for the rest of his life, he'd much rather do it with buds.

totally agree with u, Joe was a machine back in the day, and in Berlin this year, his voice was soundin stronger than its been in years. always loved Joe and Bobby, while i was never that keen on Fergie or Byron, havin said that, i love the stuff they done with Toto. dont think we'll see Bobby with Toto again in this lifetime.

I liked Spinner's version on that album. Didn't consider him a "replacement", which is probably why I really dug it. He wasn't trying to sound like Joseph Williams or be mistaken for him like a Arnel Pineda or Jason Scheff. Thought he was totally different and I loved the arrangement. Pretty doubtful that the guys in Toto hired Spinner to be anything more than a backup singer/second guitarist and that STOP LOVING YOU was intended as an experiment.

Still - I hope there's news on this DVD soon.

According to a poster on The Noticeboard, the 2010 dvd is post-poned indefinitely. And that new footage will be shot in 2011.
Whatever. This is what happens when you swap one old tenor (Bobby) for another (Joseph). That's not trading up. Joe has the edge on pitch, but it's a draw on power. Then again, maybe the dvd delay has nothing to do with lead vox at all. Shame. I was really looking frwrd to this release.

Absolutely nothing to do with vocals at all. Vocals were great on the night and Williams actually sings in tune.

Think there were some technical issues with cameras and video footage that could not be worked around. Either that or the fact that Lukather forgot to introduce Simon Phillips on the night

Being in-tune is overrated. It's about feeling. Both Joe and Bobby are past their prime. Wonder how Jean Michael Byron is sounding these days.... (jk)

Very few singers are able to maintain their range and stamina as they get older
