TS sounds great - better with age. And as tired I am of hearing the same old stuff re-packaged, I think all of Tommy's songs come off pretty well.

As for Gowan.... CSA - I guess it's not horrific, but it he just can't do it justice. GI - that version is terrible. He just sounds like his voice is so thin (all head voice), and like he has a web in his throat. I don't know. I guess he's not to bad when he's in the background on the other songs (Lorelei, for example). Not trying to start another pissing war (Gowan vs. DDY).

I think Todd's style gives all the songs a different perspective as well.

While I won't buy it, I won't kill it.

Would much prefer a new album of new material (yeah, ain't going to happen). I think I'll pull out Cyclorama - not a bad disc, even w/Gowan. I kinda like Fields of the Brave.

Oh great! Better sound quality so you can really hear how "soulless" these versions are. Can't wait for the Walmart full blown 4 disc "Greatest Hits" newly recorded versions. In that set they will have one new song as well. Except it will only be half of the song so you have to buy the "Greatest, Greatest Hits 2" also newly recorded to get the other half of the new song. :D

I hear what you're saying. That's why I won't buy I, II, II, IV, or V. It's really quite sad that they've resorted to this. Do you think they are all "soulless"? Again, I don't think Shaw's are bad at all. They don't sound identical - I wouldn't expect them to. I just don't see the point. Sort of like the Journey album of Arnel re-do's (the name eludes me at the moment - you can see the impact it had). Not bad, but to what end. Did it really bring them any new fans, or just temporarily peak interest of their current base (or at least give them all something similar to argue about).

It's more about it being pointless to do projects like this. It's not going to do anything for them and there was nothing wrong with TS' performances on the originals. It's obvious that they are looking to make a buck without having to put a lot of money, time and effort into it. Which is really sad.

For Journey it was all about getting that one big payday. Wal-Mart paid them seven bucks a package. That is unheard of. Even in these band's hay days they never got that kind of royalty exchange. Foreigner and REO couldn't agree to their own Wally deals fast enough, they were so hyped to get that easy money.
In Styx case though, if you're not being promised the biggest royalty payout of your career, what is the point of all this? Even if Wal-Mart was looking at a re-recorded package from Styx now, what do you tell them? Sorry, we just did one on our own just for the hell of it, thanks anyway?

Sorry, but I don't think any retailer has interest in these. Not to mention Universal\A&M just released two versions of yet another Greatest Hits release. To do that they would need a major record label releasing the albums which is not going to happen.

Right now it's on sale at the shows. Probably by the end of the year or sooner it'll be on styxworld. They also said it would be available in stores but don't hold your breath.

I like Difference in the World. But I wish they would put out something more upbeat.

I would like to pick up the CD. But I won't pay much for it.

You think that they would since that seemed to be one of their chief complaints about DDY's direction of the music they were doing. Just seems like that complaint is one of many others that were excuses for the real reason of giving him the boot.

Most stores that even stock Styx albums only have the compilations. I can only see stores stocking it if a record label was pushing the album and that simply is not going to happen.

They make their money on this when they sell the signed cd's when on tour. If they sell 50 copies of a cd at a show, it is $1500. The Regrneration cds give them the opportunity to sell signed copies of a cd that they haven't sold before as well as give the concert goer something that resembles the band version they just heard.

They are inexpensove to make vs new material and they can change them up as often as they want. In a weird way, it becomes a collectible because of its limited production.

Still think there are other avenues to go than this, but they aren't alone in re-recording their own music.

I can't imagine the numbers would be that high per show. Styx is has not been popular enough for people to be really wanting autographed product, let alone shelling out $30 bucks for them.
