Yes. Total expert. Errr...not. Actually, back in my days of playing clubs (with others) around Austin, I was considered a very good finger picker...on the guitar, mind you.![]()
"When you get caught between the moon and New York City...." That may be the extent of anything I know about Christopher Cross. Oh, well, I did like one or two of his songs, but I was way more into playing America covers.
And what DID become of Christopher Cross anyways? He had to rent a U-Haul to carry home all his Grammy's and then, apparently, drove it over a cliff.
As to buying Tommy's Bluegrass CD. I would listen to the inevitable samples that will show up out there and judge for yourself.
My guess is the Alabama accent will come heavily into play on the vocals and there will be terrific guitar/Dobro/mandolin work on it.

MTV is what happened to Christopher Cross. He didn't have "the look" needed for videos on MTV. It stalled and even maybe killed his career.

Christopher Cross is preceded by a certain kind of reputation. He puts all these weird restrictions on shows he plays, makes all kind of irrational demands - and that's now, when he's in no real position. My offhand guess is that he helped sink his own career by acting like a maniac back when he was big enough to do so. People remember that kind of thing and then when you're not so big anymore, they choose to avoid booking you. And not to be unkind, but bless his heart, he's not exactly visually appealing, as you pointed out. Maybe that shouldn't matter, but it does. Kinda like Kansas, LOL.
By the way, I really like his music, so I'm not saying that from the perspective of someone who's against him. He's a great singer and a truly underrated guitarist in my opinion. But if I had a venue of my own and the money to book him, I probably wouldn't, based on what I've heard about him.
As for Tommy's bluegrass album, I won't be a bit surprised if it's the best thing he's ever done. I know a lot of people don't agree with me when I say this, but I've always thought Styx was a stretch for him and not that suited to his real talents. See him live with Shaw Blades, it's like seeing the real Tommy Shaw as opposed to Tommy Shaw making himself fit into a puzzle that he did not create. He's talented enough to pull it off - hell, he's talented enough to pull ANYTHING off - but it isn't really him. I expect this bluegrass record to be top-flight. And if what I hear is true and Marty Stuart is on it, it'll be BETTER than top-flight, because Marty is the King as far as that stuff goes.

So, you're saying Christopher Cross is still around? Haven't heard anything out of him in quite a while. I always kind of liked his music. He did have a great voice too. He was a little chunky as I remember. "Ride Like the Wind" was one of my favorites. However, I think is best performance may have been as a session singer on Alan Parson's "On Air" disc. The song's name was "Long Way to Go" if I remember correctly. I'm a huge Parsons fan, loved "On Air" in whole, and was thrilled to hear Cross's voice. Sounded great. That had to be at least 10 years ago (too lazy to look at the disc) if not more.
I can see you're point on TS. I think he's just so talented (a bad solo efforts in "What If" aside). He's improved vocally with age - which is no small feat. I think he fit in Styx quite well, for it not being his "niche" as you say. When I think of the classic band I love (or loved), it's DDY, TS, and JY (as much as I can't stand him now) together. I know you don't like to get into the Gowan bashing, and I'm really not trying to start anything, but I do wonder why TS carry's on in this configuration. He is so talented - I'm surprised he isn't spending his time on these other ventures. I guess they're still makin' money, even if it is to the tune of 1500 seats every other night.

With the recent move by many "rock" artists to release a country record or song (Kidd Rock, Darius Rucker, Robert Plant, just to name a few) the idea is not completly off the wall. Does STYX take a break for him to tour behind the record - Tommy on tour opening for a major country act would be appealing to a lot of booking agents, he could do the new bluegrass stuff and throw in a few of his STYX hits to fill out the set (not to mention the paycheck as the opener for a major country arena tour would probably match or be more than the current STYX paycheck).

I'm sure JY is hoping that he doesn't have a lot of success with this project. If he leaves the band to pursue more solo work, then it's curtains for JY.

ok first of all stop trying to make jy seem like some evil man trying to squeeze money out of dennis and tommy's hard work. Styx is a band, was a band, and will continue to be a band. They love playing and that's what they do.

I didn't say he squeezed money out of anyone. However, it's not hard to see that JY benefited from the efforts of TS and DDY being in the band. If you think that Styx would have become what it was without TS or DDY your crazy. JY has contributed some great guitar work but that didn't make Styx what it was. Without Tommy in Styx nobody would take them seriously.
