I want some of what they are smoking if they think someone is interested in using their music for a movie or commercial. Those days are over. Of course they could be asked to use these recordings for an instructional video on "What Not to Do With Your Bands Classic Hits".

Well, to be fair, any time you've had a hit song, ever, there's always the chance the phone will ring and someone will offer something that might revive it in some unforeseen way. Recently "Free to be You and Me" was used as the central theme of a huge Target campaign - I daresay nobody saw that one coming, LOL. So yes, I'm absolutely sure Styx music will be featured in some more movies and TV stuff in the future, it's almost inevitable with a catalog that large and well-known. Who could have anticipated that "Don't Stop Believin'" would be so huge for a different generation? It would only take one piece of the right kind of exposure to do the same thing for a song like "Come Sail Away."
Now, that said, I certainly anticipate that most producers or brands would rather have the original, famous versions than new ones, for sure. But then again, the version of "Takin' Care of Business" that was in the Office Depot (or was it Staples?) commercials was a re-record, and I've heard other ads (including "Mr. Roboto" in the VW commercial) that were re-records. It all depends on the price and usage when it comes right down to it. And how close the versions are. Blue Oyster Cult did some re-records that were so phenomenally close that you can hardly tell the difference. Jethro Tull did some that were relative crap because Ian' voice is so shot. With Styx, because there's a very different voice singing some of the stuff, they're in a bit of a different position, in my opinion.
