Why Bother?

So I go out to Styxworld to see when/if they are coming to PA. The closest I could find was Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe. A nice place to see a show (saw Asia there right after they reformed a few years ago). But here's some facts:

> 2 hours from Philly and Reading, in the middle of nowhere
Somewhat close to Allentown
Venue seats 1,600.
Ticket prices: $44 to $49
Other bands playing this venue in early 2011: Rubix Cube (80's Tribute Band), Yellow Brick Road (Elton John Tribute Band), Parrot Beach (Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band - Not even Jimmy himself!), ABBA Tribute Band, Billy Joel Tribute Band. The only non-tribute band I see is Uriah Heep.

That's 1600 (sixteen hundred) folks. Figure the majority will pay $44, and they sell out (I'd like to think that's possible) - that's just over 70K. Listen, I have no insight or knowledge of how tour deals are done, but I'd think after the venue takes it's cut, less the cost of hauling their sorry asses there, plus paying the crew, other expenses, etc., I can't imagine there's too much left to "split" (immaterial of what the %'s are....poor Gowan probably gets the least after Ricky).

What has become of one of my favorite bands. Please. Stop already. Throw in the towel. Go off and do other cool things (TS), or get the nodules on your vocal chords removed (JY).

I say all this, but for $44, I might actually go. It's a night out.

But really, 1600 and a venue willing to host Rubix Cube. Good Lord.

Why shell out the $44 dollars ? Within the next 2 years they will be playing in Allentown at kids parties for free at the local Burger King or Jack In the Box.

Nothing better then eating a Whopper or Jumbo Jack while rockin out to Miss America followed by Blue Collar Man!

This is what makes America great!!!

To play devil's advocate here, Dennis has played this venue at least twice. Does that mean he should throw in the towel?

I read somewhere where DDY played the closing of a Sanitation Department somewhere near Chicago.

The recycle movement that is sweeping our country has made many sanitation jobs obsolute.

I am glad Dennis would do this. Kind of a Harry's Hands type of thing( free agency, recycling same thing!!)

Good point. Maybe it does. I don't know. I guess when I think of things relative to what once was, and what could possibly be if it weren't for history and bad blood, it just gets me thinking. Do I have any delusions that if DDY and the rest of the band "reconciled', that they'd be selling out 18K arenas like Roger Waters did this fall? Of course not. But maybe smaller theaters vs. 1600 seat movie houses. Again, I don't know. Just musing again - it's been a while.

My bet... and I don't know... but I would guess Dennis takes a FAR smaller cut than Styx. Styx puts on and produces a bigger show with their own stuff. They haul their gear around and pay for busses, trucks and all that.

And Dennis doesn't use the Styx name - which is a much bigger selling point than "The Music Of...".

And who cares anymore? If DDY played the TN State Fair Grounds (which is the biggest dump in the middle of the worst neighborhood in Nashville)... I'd go. $44 is a bit steep to see a concert tho. Just sayin'

I don't go to many concerts. Only the Eagles, and Roger Waters in the past few years. There weren't any (including nosebleeds) tickets for either anywhere near the $44 range.

I look at it from the stand point we are lucky DDY is touring at all and that I have a chance to see him if I want. I thought after the break up the chances of DDY touring solo was slim to none. This was based on what he did when he was solo and Styx was on hold. Personally, I think that the "Dennis doesn't want to tour" is over blown. I think it's closer to they couldn't reach a compromise on the amount of touring.

The TN Fair Grounds Grandstand is truly a pit - but a historic pit. Hopefully they won't tear it down. Which is what it sounds like they are planning to do :(

I saw my first real concert there back in the early '70s - Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show also saw Captin and Tenille (sp?), Saw Willie Nelson there several times, Alice Cooper, Weird Al, BOC, Beach Boys, and many more. Back in the day when you would buy your concert ticket (usually like $8.00) and you would get in the state fair for free. WKDF Radio (back when it was a rock station) held their "One for the Sun" concerts there. It was a really cool place for it's time - now not so much.
