I just ran up on this on E-BAY. Cyclorama CD & DVD. The DVD discription says...The DVD portion of this release features a 5.1 surround sound mix, music videos, behind-the-scenes commentary, lyrics, and weblinks anybody seen this or own it, just wondering what "Music Videos" refers too.

I'll just toss this out there, because it's been bugging me since the CD came out. :-D

I love Brian Wilson as much as anybody, but that "Fooling Yourself Thing" was 100% written, arranged, and recorded by Glen - years prior to that CD. It was a small piece of a longer song in demo form. There's no way in HELL the band would've used the complete song, but Tommy loved the "Fooling Yourself" part and wanted to use it. The band took the original multi-track of Glen's, one phrase at a time had Wilson sing one of the vocal lines exactly as Glen had originally sung it (and had a couple of the other bandmembers do the same), and mixed it. Wilson had zero to do with that arrangement or production - it was all Burtnik.

That's not actually unusual at all - on several of Glen's songs on Styx CDs, they re-used a lot of Glen's original multitracks - World Tonite, Love Is The Ritual, Love At First Sight, Edge Of The Century, etc. Plinky is ALL OVER a couple of Styx albums, but he's never recorded with them. :-D

Some songs on Cyclo were true collaborations - Glen specifically told me during the writing and recording of "One With Everything" that everybody had a hand in that song, and it was super cool.

Other songs had very little collaboration, but the agreement was to equally assign songwriting credit to everyone.

I found it humorous that Glen had to get Styx's permission to use "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye", which he 99% wrote, excepting Gowan's keyboard piece (which he ended up not using anyways), on his WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD CD.

That's interesting, I always wondered what kind of hand Wilson had in that recording. Do you know what other songs Glen had a hand in writing on Cyclorama? We were talking earlier that it seems that some of phrasing style shows up through-out.

killing the thing you love aka lennon's assassin was 100% burtnik. somewhere i have the demo. haven't compared the two in a long time, but i don't recall much differences between the songs. and yes, the lyrics were written years before cyclorama, for all of you conspiracy theorists. ;)

If it is what I think it is, it's a DVD-A of Cyclorama. There was no CD included. The album is remixed in 5.1. There are 2 versions: one is 5.1 DTS that can be played on any stereo with 5.1 capability. The other version is DVD-A which is a now practically defunct format that ouputs a higher audio resolution and can only be played Certain DVD players. It also has an interview with Tommy and Gary Loizzo, song lyrics and a couple of lame videos. One is for Fields of the Brave with silly shots of landscapes. The other is for These are the Times and I think it includes some bizarre background images used on the screen when they performed the song in concert. But I don't think it is the Yes I Can video. As I recall, they dropped the Tenacious D stuff and that 9/11 song at the end.

STYX did release a DVD/CD combo called 20th Century Live. This has the Yes I Can video and footage from the Brave New World Tour, the Main Event Tour with REO and Journey and Criminal Mind from some other tour. The CD is a re-release of most of Styxworld Live 2001. Incidentally, the wiki listed below has a few errors.

The lyrics were written in '94. The Cyclo version isn't *quite* 100% Glen. There's a middle section (sort of a "marching band" kinda thing in odd time) in the Styx version that is not in Glen's original. Tommy wrote that. It's very Styx-ish - Glen liked it. And Larry's keyboard part is all different. I'm not sure who played on the original demo - it was probably Glen. But Larry's is a definite improvement.

None of the original demo tracks were kept for the Styx version - it was 100% re-recorded.

They were most certainly aware of how it might be interpreted (although I must say that I was never told that this was the case). For whatever reason, Tommy and Larry really liked the song. Not one of my favorites, but I do appreciate it as a great arrangement with some awesome lyrics and some great musical performances (Glen's vocal and Larry's piano).

Who's Plinky?

Plinky Giglio is Glen's ex-brother-in-law - he co-wrote a lot of songs with Glen back in the late 80s/early 90s, and was VERY involved in the writing and production of the WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD CD. He owned (owns?) a recording studio in New Jersey where Glen recorded a lot of his demos. Very talented dude.

He's a really good keyboardist and comes up with some awesome rhythm/synth bass sequences (like the one that drives Edge Of A Century).

thanks paul- like i said, i haven't listened to either version in a number of years, and forgot where they differed. glad there was more of a collaborative effort on cyclorama. regardless, i *really* like the song, and am glad it was selected for cyclo. :D

I dont love the album, but I love certain songs off it. I love "Yes I can" which is my 2nd fave styx song ever after "Come sail away". I also love "Waiting for our time", "These are the times", "Together" and "Feilds of the brave". The rest is either ok, or filler (In my opinin).
What is understood need not be discussed

I have it. It's the CD on one side and the the flip side is the DVD with all songs in 5.1 Surround, the video for Yes I Can and some short commentaries strictly about the 5.1 Surround factor. It works for me because it's the only copy of Cyclorama I have.

It's called a DualDisc. Short lived format. There was a separate DVD-A only release which happened before the DualDisc.
