I'm assuming that this is a hypothetical setlist. I like pretty much like every song on the setlist with the exception of Haven't We Been Here Before. All great songs otherwise.

I'd rather see him do more stuff from 100 Years and Boomchild (Boom and Harry's Hands for sure) and maybe one Shaw tune. It would make that tune more special and he really doesn't NEED to be doing any of those really. He's Dennis DeYoung, not Styx- but I'm sure most will disagree. If he did a different Shaw song each night, that could be cool.

It's like if Paul McCartney's shows had a bunch of Lennon songs in them. He'll usually do a Lennon song and a Harrison song, but not 5 or 10. That makes those songs special. Since Dennis had the lions share of the Styx hits, he really doesn't need to do that other stuff- but it's his show, he can do what he wants. I think it makes it look like he needs the other guys which he doesn't. Same could be said for Styx and Dennis' songs, the difference being that Dennis had most of the hits with Styx, so if none of those were played, it'd be funky for them.

Good points, Bry, but the type of setlist Froy gives us here, or more songs from 100 Years etc., are not in the picture, ever, I fear. Dennis knows why he is getting the gigs he is getting and what is expected. (He has talked about that multiple times). The new band has given him the option to be the Voice of Styx along with support from people who can play the songs audiences expect.

And Froy. On some radio program, Dennis performed 100 Years on piano with Jimmy on guitar and harmony and it was terrific, so I know it can be done quite well, acoustically. I think Save Me could be a fantastic acoustic song, too.

And, also, Froy, I would personally love that acoustic setlist. Would rob the nearest bank and steal the nearest airplane, if that's what it took, to get to THAT show!

It's funny you feel this way when Dennis does Tommy Shaw Styx tunes but when Gowan destroys Dennis Styx tunes you are all in,
Dennis is Styx Tommy is Styx Jy is Styx that's how you have to look at it. If Shaw sang Lady good for him . If Gowan sings it shame on him. If Dennis and his band now carry the STYX tourch I say it's about damn time,

For the most part I think this is true. But it did take JY and TS to round out Styx's sound. The fact that Styx does not play quite a few songs that were Dennis' kind of proves that. They haven't got someone that can pull that off. I think it would be safe to say that if you were to poll the average listener that knew Styx in their hay day, the first name that would come to mind is Dennis DeYoung.

Styx is still selling STYX. Dennis is selling DENNIS DEYOUNG SOLO ARTIST. That is the difference Froy.
Styx was a BAND that had hits with Dennis. Dennis is no longer there. Styx is still expected to perform the hits and most of the hits were Dennis's.
I don't agree that Dennis was Styx as Higgy suggests. Styx was a GROUP. Dennis is the first one to say that, at least in interviews. Whether he thought that or not is anyone's guess.

Dennis on the other hand should be promoting himself as a solo artist with a new record to plug and a new career to get moving. Sure, he can play his Styx hits. He can play Tommy's too (and he is). However, what does that get him? I suppose it sells records and that gives him dough, but how many times can you sell 30 year old albums? If he promotes his new career, he sells new albums and moves into a new chapter. If he sings the old stuff, well, then he's hoping people will still buy those old albums, in which case (to Froy's point about Gowan) BOTH camps should be singing Styx's songs. I just have a hard time believing the old albums still sell enough to matter. I think that if 100 Years (or Cyclo) were released today on DECENT labels, then those albums would sell more TODAY than the 30 year old albums of Styx would sell TODAY. I don't mean they'd outsell those albums (duh).
So if Cyclo or 100 came out today and sold 50,000 copies in 2011, I'd bet that Grand Illusion wouldn't sell that in 2011. So I don't understand the point- Other than touring of course and making money that way. Is Dennis trying to sell more concert tickets by adding Tommy stuff? Could be, but how's anyone going to know that he's done that other than word of mouth?

I guarantee you, that had Dennis not started playing Tommy's songs, nobody would've missed them because they know they're coming to see Dennis. Now that he has done that, I think he'll have a hard time NOT doing them.

But why promote Shaw, etc.? Makes no sense. Dennis doing HIS Styx songs is tons of Styx. I dunno, I think that 100 years coulda sold a lot more and I think he should promote it more. He certainly doesn't need to promote Renegade...

Plus, as a Styx fan, it'd sure be more fun to hear "Ballerina", "Father OSA", instead of Blue Collar Man at a Dennis show.

Let's hope that's a mistake, Dennis wouldn't perform a track from Cyclorama just like Styx wouldn't play something from One Hundred Years. Maybe he was just being a smartass. Has to be it.

I think that Dennis is doing what HE wants to do. At this point in his career he has that luxury. His shows are featuring what he feels the average\casual fan wants to hear. It's featuring what Styx was doing prior to his departure and maybe he feels that is what is lacking in the current Styx shows. The reality is Dennis is going to do what he enjoys and for some that may not be exactly what they want. He has to tailor the shows to what the majority not the minority to make it work. At this stage it's no longer about carving out a new solo career. it's about revisiting the best music of Dennis' career.

Go to a DDY show then go to a current Styx show then ask yourself, which one was more of a "Styx" concert (in the 1977-1983 sense).
Dennis is Styx.

I go to a DDY show and see a former member of Styx with a bunch of studio musicians playing Styx songs. I go to a Styx show and see 2, sometimes 3, members from the Classic lineup playing Styx songs. I consider Todd to be a close since he was around with in '96 and '97 with Dennis in the group. John is dead anyway so he had to be replaced. Is it the same as Styx with Dennis? Nope. Do I still enjoy it more than current DDY? Yes!!

This was recorded on 08/04/06 and posted on here shortly after. This is from the Glen Beck program and Joe Pags was filling in for him. Joe talkes about "can bands still call themselves the name without the lead singer in the band anymore". He talks about Styx,Queen, Jouney, as well as Van Halen. The topic of discussion is similar to what is being talked about here so I thought I would upload this and post it again for your enjoyment :).

I'd rather see Dennis and his "studio musicians" who change things up once (or twice) in a while than see two or three from the "classic line up" play the same pretty stagnant show day in and day out :?

Change the subject then ehh?
I thought Dennis wrote and produced everything, giving the other guys a little credit here and there to make everybody happy.
So after many years the other guys in Styx simply had to let Dennis go,because they were feeling guilty about getting credits and pay for something they did not deserve.
Dennis moved on to making four solo discs that became multi million sellers, mega Broadway productions and a star on the walk of fame.
So everything worked out in the end.Ohh and now he can have Suzanne on stage with him, which he could not do with Styx.
It's a win win situ here froy.
Win win I say.
Or do you deep down admit that Dennis really isn't that good without the other guys after all.
Nah,,,you wouldn't admit to that now.Would you?
Jesus loves you ,but everybody else thinks you're a knob.

Yes!!

I'd rather see Dennis and his "studio musicians" who change things up once (or twice) in a while than see two or three from the "classic line up" play the same pretty stagnant show day in and day out :?

GI and POE tour was so long ago that I almost forgot.

Did you also forget Dennis wrote 75 percent of that stuff? And produced both albums

Change the subject then ehh?

IMHO, Dennis had a better shot at anything solo then either Tommy or JY. He seems to be doing just fine. I would bet he would be able to book more then what he does if HE wanted to. When's the last time a record label came to the current Styx and ASKED THEM to record an album? That's right, no one did. On the other hand, DDY was approached and asked to record an album. It wasn't him taking demos around trying to get a deal.

Styx - another band in the long list of groups who have trampled their legacy in the past 10 years, or so....Styx and Journey the two biggest loser bands. Dennis was Styx, and SP was Journey....anything else is a bad karaoke experience. Although I did like Cyclorama. Alot.
Tom Brady IS the G.O.A.T.
