Tommy Shaw debuting on the Grand Ole Opry on March 26

Postby Rockwriter » Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:04 am

Hello:

Tommy Shaw will make his Grand Ole Opry debut in support of his new bluegrass album 'The Great Divide' on March 26 in Nashville http://www.examiner.com/music-industry- ... y-march-26

This ought to be well worth seeing. If you have not seen Tommy in this kind of acoustic setting, you haven't really seen him, in my opinion.

God willing I will be at this show reviewing it.

Wonder if Tommy is going to cut his hair to make himself look more like a country boy?

What is Blue Grass?

Country? Polka? A combination of both. Hee Haw meets Andy Williams?? Rap teams up with swing? I honestly dont have a clue what Blue grass music is.

What college team has that blue turff football field??

He ought to tour under the name Jonathan Chance.

Blue Grass -- Country music that uses banjos, guitars, mandolins, dobros, and fiddles (sometimes). No pedal steel and no accordions. Pretty basic music generally. (See: Deliverance). Some of it is a bit more sophisticated in its sound and chords, but the majority is three-chord stuff that is pretty easy to play and sang...uh...sing.

Boise State.

Rockin' Tommy. Yes. Definitely. Has been making bleeding-eardrums screamer-rock ever since that Broadway guy was sent packing. (See: Just Be)

UHHHHHH NO.

Bluegrass when played well is far from some three cord exercise in simplicity. And although some of the vocals can be a bit "scratchy" the harmonies are often incredible.
How abut a few samples (and someone linked to Deliverance, if you stick through that clip to the last minute and a half or so you will see what I'm talking about)...

Alison Krauss & Union Station

Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnI3b9aH ... re=related

Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder

and one just for fun
Hayseed Dixie - "Ace Of Spades" Motorhead Cover

Bluegrass may not be your up of tea but don't downgrade it or it's players as some bunch of hillbillies with no talent.

mr. v I was mostly responding to Yogi in jest. I know from Bluegrass because I have played with bluegrass players. A lot of it has simple chords, but there is very much sophistication in playing and, definitely, in the harmonies.

I am a fan of this style of country music myself.

Froy, didn't you know? Tommy limits his bathing routine so it makes that bathwater he sells to his die hard fans more expensive and collectible. 8)

That's funny, my girlfriend bought us tickets for that night without knowing who would be performing! I've lived in Nashville for a few years but never been to the Opry so this should be a memorable first.

Yonder Mountain String Band has quite a following. Met them in an Applebee's once. Nice guys.

Crazy Train (Cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62P-jTN8 ... re=related

Angel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERjlLEHl ... x6OZ-gsj2H

I guess their concerts are quite an event...bluegrass deadheads I hear.

You need to nail Shaw down, Tommy how about ending the Styx fiasco and making contact with DDY. That's what I would say,

And, Froy, that is why I am not you.

I'll be nice, respectful and tell Tommy how much I really enjoy his music - which is the truth.

I will also ask him to autograph my copy of his latest album and see if he will let me get a picture with him.

But thanks for asking.
