Where Is The New CD?

Postby trekman » Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:58 am

Six years since the release of Big Bang Theory. Are there even any plans for a new one? I dont see any news on their web site. :(

Nothing new will come from Styx. Apparently they don't like having all of this new freedom to rock with their "bigger engine."

Their idea of new CDs or releases is re-recordings of the bands staple songs that they have been playing to death. So, if you are not interested in that you are basically SOL.

Maybe if certain members would not have screwed with the band line up you would see a album of new material. Having someone with vision in the band certainly helps.

I cant believe that Shaw and Young have no desire to write and produce something new and exciting. I wish they would go back to thier "Rock" roots like Equinox & Crystal Ball.

didn't tommy JUST put out an album of new material? how quickly folks forget. yeah, it's not styx, but you're making it sound like NOTHING new has been released at all. lighten up, folks! it's a BAND! and even though you don't consider it "new" material, we have 2 regeneration cds. so the band hasn't exactly been stagnant.

Releasing EPs of songs from your back catalog that are really no different then the originals I think qualifies as stagnant from a creative forward moving band\artist. Speaking of Tommy's latest solo release, it kind of makes you wonder why Styx can't get a label to release a album of new material. You would think that it would be easier for Styx the band to do it then one of it's members getting a label to release a solo album that isn't even in the genre of Tommy's fan base.

You're wasting your time.

Ironically, they have less "new" stuff to say then Styx does.

at what point is it ok for them to not write new material?

i mean if they feel their "styx" writing isn't up to snuff these days then why bother?

of maybe they still feel they have great material in them but with albums not selling and "cyclorama" being a great album that sold what 60-100k total then why bother?

i do agree that it gets old seeing the band playing the same set list over and over again but the same thing will be said about dennis's set list soon now that he has added the tommy songs....

but me and the 26 other people that are clammering for new material dont pay the bills.....they could put out new stuff until they are blue in the face but today's live market wont support them actually "supporting" new material.....the regular crowds want the same ole same ole.

they could put out new stuff with dennis in the band and it actually be good and it would be very lucky to sell at all....they could then promote a tour "for the new album....we're playing it in it's entirety" and me, froy and toph would buy tickets.....and it would even be enough to play the local rib fest.

both dennis and styx are now a nostalgia act and they will forever be required to play songs from their past to get gigs of any significance.

Well I doubt that the band feels their writing is "not up to snuff". After all hasn't JY stated that this is the "Best Version of Styx Ever"? If thats the case, then writing great new songs should be a cake walk. One would think that with all the complaining about how their creative song writing for songs "that rock" were squashed by Dennis you would think they would be jumping at the chance to finally be free of that restriction and put out this rocking music they so wanted to do. I still contend that a album of new material would sell just as much as the Regeneration re-records based on how they are producing and selling them. They could do it if they wanted to and it wouldn't even put a dent in their touring schedule. I remember that Def Leppard had a make shift mobile studio to work on their Sparkle Lounge album while on tour. I feel that they just want to take the easy money which is tour around playing the hits. As far as creative energy for something new, that is dead.

actually some artists occasionally do concede that they dont write as well or their writing doesnt meet their fans standards or wishes. steve walsh from kansas is an example of this. but i do 100% agree that all new material would sell probably as well as the regeneration stuff especially if they made it all available at the shows. i'm all for new material but i just dont expect to get too much of it these days.

Fair enough. I can't see an album with all new original material coming out any time in the near future. It's a shame because a lot of bands from the era are still making records.

And the point is? They have more than earned the right to tour and make a good living. The time is past for anything awesome from current Styx or DDY. One With Everything is the closest either have gotten to a great tune.

Well, Styx has not made any kind of statement to that effect. In fact they have made quite the opposite. They used to say how they were writing all this new material together while on the road. Basically, I have written them off as far as putting any substantial new material (i.e. full album) out. Clearly they are aiming for strictly the nostalgia market.

The point is they have made statements that they were writing all this new material together but, other then a song here and there we haven't seen anything. Not to mention that what they have released new isn't even close to the rocking material that they felt they were not able to do when Dennis was in the band. One would think that is what they would be releasing. They certainly can do what they want to do but that doesn't that every fan is going to like it.
