Good post Dan. One thing: its no rumor that they were watching it in real time. The White House press briefing this afternoon stated multiple times and unequivocally that Obama and aides were watching the raid as it went down.

And as expected , the conspiracy theories begin.

Funny how some of these idiots say he should've gotten a certain burial. Last I checked not many of the innocent people killed by this evil bastard got the chance for an actual burial.
I still think the two bullets in the head was way too nice to take him out. He should've been tortured to death for days !

Osama bin Laden is dead and buried at sea - conspiracy theory or true?
It may not be true that Osama bin Laden is dead and buried at sea, according to two Pakistani TV stations and some Americans, who feel he is still alive.
U.S. President Barack Obama announced on Sunday night that dreaded terrorist and al Qaeda leader bin Laden was killed in "a firefight" with U.S. forces led by the CIA. bin Laden was reportedly killed - shot on the head - in a mansion that was stormed by U.S. forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Soon thereafter, to respect Islamic rituals and practice of burying a body in 24 hours, the U.S. forces smuggled his body out of Pakistan and buried it at sea. A senior U.S. official said that as it was difficult in finding a country where his body could be buried, they decided to bury him at sea.
The AFP reported Pakistan television stations as saying that the lower half of Laden's face in the death photo is from one of his handout photos. The upper half of his face may be from another picture of dead body.
Even among Americans, some still believe bin Laden is alive and well as neither the Talibans nor al Qaeda has come out with an official statement that bin Laden is dead.
One reveler in Time Square quipped that this is just a well-crafted media propaganda to boost Obama's flagging ratings before elections.
"If Osama whas really been killed and buried at sea, why aren't clear evidence being produced? Why isn't the government showing us clear photos or videos of his dead body? Is he really dead? I doubt whether his body has been thrown into the sea," the reveler, who identified himself only as 'Nick' said.
Meanwhile, even if it is true that bin Laden is truly dead and truly buried at sea, it has failed to appease Islamic scholars, who claim that only those who died at sea, away from land, can be buried at sea.
As bin Laden died on land, he should have been buried on land, according to Islamic rites, that include placing the body in a grave with the head pointed toward the holy city of Mecca. Moreover, Muslim prayers have to be recited and the body need to be ritually washed, as is usually required by Islamic law. And, even if the body is buried at sea, it needs to be wrapped in a shroud and buried only after a brief Islamic service is held, the scholars said.
The scholars feel the Americans have humiliated the Muslims by disregarding Islamic practice and customs.
"The Americans want to humiliate Muslims through this burial, and I don't think this is in the interest of the U.S. administration," Omar Bakri Mohammed, a radical cleric in Lebanon, said.
"It is not acceptable and it is almost a crime to throw the body of a Muslim man into the sea. The body of bin Laden should have been handed over to his family to look for a country or land to bury him," another Islamic scholar from Iraq, Abdul-Sattar al-Janabi, who preaches at Baghdad's famous Abu Hanifa mosque, said.
"They can say they buried him at sea, but they cannot say they did it according to Islam," Mohammed al-Qubaisi, Dubai's grand mufti, said about bin Laden's burial. "Sea burials are permissible for Muslims in extraordinary circumstances. This is not one of them."
Another Muslim scholar also said a simple solution would have been to hand over bin Laden's body to his family or bury him in an unmarked grave.
"What the Americans have done is forbidden by Islam and could alienate Muslims further and anger them. It could trigger a retaliation," the scholar said.

Let's not make this another polarizing issue.

Everyone who helped make this happen in any way deserves accolades.

This should have NOTHING to do with whether or not he gets re-elected, excepting that it does show he has his fingers in the homeland security hair pie.

Blind devotion is still "blind"...

ITs their JOB to listen every fucking time dude... Elected officials are elected, and are legally (and morally) bound to listen and respond to the People who elect them... so if one (or more) asks "show me the proof"... they are duty bound to do so...

There's a reason The President and 1st Lady are called "the President and 1st Lady" and not "the King and Queen"... maybe you've forgotten "who serves who"...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I haven't kept up with the thread so I don't know which articles have already been posted. Here is a good one I read this morning with an overview of the hunt for his personal courier, and some details on the mission itself:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_bin_laden ... _bin_laden

They mention that a part of his skull was blown off by the bullet above his left eye, and that's one of the reasons they are debating releasing the death photo (brains are visible). Eventually they are going to have to do it -- people will demand it. And I would love to see the SEAL team's video too, but who knows - that may never happen.

I think it's naive for anyone to think Obama had nothing to do with this but take credit when it happened. Sounds like he's been involved for a while in the planning and decision making. Hey, that's admirable and I'm glad he got it done -- credit is definitely due.

I made the mistake of watching MSNBC last night, and had it running in the background for a while. Got sick of hearing the pundits gloating and politicizing the event, bashing Bush and looping footage of him saying he didn't think about Bin Laden that much, that he was marginalized and wasn't a priority. For all his many faults, c'mon... Bush would have jumped at the opportunity exactly as Obama did if he'd had the same intelligence (and this tip on the compound only came in August, 2010). I personally believe Bush cared very much, but said those things at the time to minimize public focus on the embarrassing unsuccessful hunt. Just another very poor choice of ways to express himself, though.

As for Obama, I don't personally believe he did this just for a quick political "win", but of course it's a benefit politically and definitely will be become an issue in the campaign. Good for him, though... the country needed this, and he got the job done. I don't agree with most everything else he does, but he gets big props for this in my book.

While I won't go so far as to say Obama was in on the planning of this mission (he has no military expertise that I know of), I will give him credit for having the balls to give the go ahead for the mission. The opportunity to get Bin Laden was there before and the order was not given. I agree, he deserves credit and kudos for making the tough, and by all current appearances, correct call here.

Posted this in another thread, but it applies to your post as well:

The unilateral strike was straight out of the Bush Doctrine, and CBS' Lara Logan got Obama to admit as much:

Logan: Isn’t that the case now? I mean, do you really think that if the U.S. forces had Osama bin Laden in their sights and the Pakistanis said no, that they wouldn’t fire or wouldn’t go after him?

Obama: I think actually this is current doctrine. There was some dispute when I said this last August. Both the administration and some of my opponents suggested, well, you know, you shouldn’t go around saying that. But I don’t think there’s any doubt that that should be our policy, and will continue to be our policy.

Logan: But it is the current policy.

Obama: I believe it is the current policy.

Logan: So there’s no change then.

Obama: I don’t think there is going to be a change there.

I think that he (Obama) and other administration officials realized that you simply do what it takes when the opportunity arises. Clinton passed on numerous chances and we had to play hide and seek with this maniacal asshole for 20 years because of it. Obama's unilateral authorization was absolutely the right thing to do and he deserves credit for that. Fuck Pakistan.

I don't begrudge Obama his back pats, and I don't see in the media where he isn't getting them either. From what I've heard and read so far most of his non-supporters are actually impressed he finally did something he didn't screw up. But the majority of the credit belongs to the military who carried all this out.

No one is saying the majority doesn't belong to those who pulled off the mission. But he had choices here, and he made the right ones. To say he has nothing to do with it is just wrong. Love or hate the guy, he made the right choice, and ultimately it came down to HIS order. This involved going into a country without their knowledge... that does not happen without white house involvement. Same for Bush. Anything that happened on his watch... i.e. Iraq... was HIS decision. Of course he did none of the WORK, but it only happened because of HIM and his administration. People can't say there are not choices. Clinton made some wrong ones when it came to Osama. So there are always choices these presidents have to make, and sometimes they don't know it was a bad one until hind site. In hind site, this will be a good one.
