Styx opening for Foreigner

Postby Baron Von Bielski » Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:16 pm

I know that in a couple of threads regarding the European tour I was pretty hard on Foreigner because I firmly believe that they should be the opener. That hasn't changed, but after listening to Can't Slow Down and part of their live album I think they're still a good band. Kelly Hansen has a great voice and the band sounds great. Can't Slow Down is actually a pretty solid rock album and it's good that they're still producing new music in this lousy era. That being said, Styx still has more original members and one is the lead singer. Styx has two lead guitarists and an excellent rock drummer who we all know is only a replacement because the original passed away. Plus, the original bassist plays from time to time. They also have an amazing keyboardist who unfortunately doesn't have the best voice, but Tommy still sounds great and sings more than half the songs. Styx should not be opening, but Foreigner isn't some lousy band as I may have portrayed them as.

I saw Styx and Foreigner on tour together a few years back (07 or 08) at Mud Island in Memphis. Both put on a great show. Foreigner opened for Syx that night and IMO blew Styx away. I am a biger Styx fan than Foreigner, but Styx was not in top form that night. Temp was around 100, and Tommy seemed to be under the weather. Foreigner had the crowd on their feet the whole show, Styx for the most of it.
Some of the reason's I tought Foreigner was better that night...
Tommy seemed sick
First time I saw Kelly with Foreigner, he was awesome. All over the stage, and down in the crowd, and thru the crowd.
So even though Foreigner may have been playing the same show for years, this was the first time I had seem them with Kelly. Were as with Styx, I have seen them many times with new line up and it was the same show, so it was nothing new.

And I think Sty should open for the main reason, they are not putting out a new cd of new music this year. Foreigner is. New music, not redo's should put you in the top spot.

The new cd is (was) coming out this summer. Did that change?

Is that the follow up to Can`t Slow Down? Wasn`t aware they had plans to release another?
I was surprised they didn`t play at least one track off Can`t Slow Down.

They are suppose to be doing a cd of new material, plus a cd of the hits rerecorded.

I still think that using Chuck as an example of a active member of Styx is a stretch. He is more like a "special guest", popping up here and there and only sitting in for two songs. That's not really an active member in ny book. Does anybody know if he even played the bass tracks for the Regurgitation EPs? BTW, knocking Gowan's vocals will get you on the "Sh*t List" on this board. Be careful!

Or is this a situation were the band says he participated in the recordings but in reality it was someone else? Like when they did the new tracks for the greatest Hits release. Where it was actually Todd being very careful to mirror John's style.

Define "very careful" because you can very clearly tell that it's Todd playing on "Lady '95"

at the very least the Karaoke Foreigner should be co-headlining with Styx

Would Neal Schon go out as Journey with 4 new guys?

If memory serves me correctly. I think I remembered this comment from an interview Todd did and it was discussed that they really did not want people to know that it wasn't John doing those tracks.
