Great band this STYX band,,

Sorry, but this just sounds very odd to me.

August doesn't sound right. He sounds like Tommy trying to sound like Kevin Chalfant. Just odd. Kinda like when Tommy sings Open Arms.

The backup vocals are ridiculously lame. Whoever is singing in falsetto ruins the song for me....it just sounds gay.

I thought he switched to playing on a Yamaha as part of his rig, unless the backing keyboard player is using an Oberheim?

Neither band is "really" Styx. The current incarnation for lack of a better term can only deliver about half of the material from their history without sounding like a cover band themselves. Though Gowan may play very well, it really only goes that far. Dennis' band is pretty much in the same boat except for the amount of material they can play accurately... which translates to more. Now it may be all fine 'n' dandy if you have a singer in your band that can imitate an original and kudos to DeYoung for expanding the live set, but it doesn't float the boat for me. The August thing doesn't work. The Gowan thing doesn't work. But I know what does... do you?

You know, you can like both, neither, one or the other, but those of us that like both bands - we are the lucky ones. Two great bands playing the music we love to hear, and for the most part both playing it really well.

I guess they are if your talking about a band that lacks creativity so much that they resort to making retreads of their back catalog and digging up songs from bands that current members were previously a part of. So if you use that as the criteria then they would be the "real deal".

You're right, Dennis digging up Styx back catalog and performing sucky versions of Tommy's songs from that band that he used to be with certainly makes Styx look much more like the 'real deal'. Froyline did a great job at proving that.

The fact of the matter is it's you haters that CONSTANTLY post youtube's trying to either prove that Styx sucks or that DDY is better. Then when something as bad as this is posted to start a thread about how great this "new Styx" is that DDY has...all it does is prove to me how hypocritical you idiots are. You guys must definitely be trying to compensate for 'something'.

It's a song Styx should play though, regardless. Maybe Tommy could give it a go?

But they won't. The same goes for Rockin' the Paradise. They guy they hired to sing it just can't pull it off. But I gues that is what JY and Tommy consider a perfect fit.

I can almost get Tommy and JY not wanting to play Babe or Mr. Roboto, but The Best of Times is quintessential Styx and it's a crime it isn't being played. Trying to be too cool and losing the fact that they were kind of a geeky hard rock band in the 80's. Embrace it. I totally get that Tommy, JY and Dennis can't get along. But ignoring a huge part of the catalog is the one thing about the current Styx lineup I do not like.
