Gowan Interview

Postby Cassie May » Fri Aug 05, 2011 10:40 am

Get ready to speculate yet again. Here's what Gowan says about new music:

LG: We have lots of new things. The problem is: There’s this insatiable demand for the band to play around the world. So to find the time to really dedicate ourselves properly to making a full new album is very difficult.

But having said that, it’s always on our minds. You never know. We could end up doing it before the end of the year.

A number of the band members have stated they have written lots of new material together. They've been boasting this for years. So what do they do when they have an opportunity to release some of it on a regular basis? They do retreads of songs from another band that Tommy was in. For me it's quite simple, put up or shut up. Otherwise you are stringing your fan base along to keep them interested. At least with DeYoung he's straight forward about stuff like that. When he was asked about his next recording project he said that he doesn't expect to be working on anything in the near future.

Gowan is sick in the head,

When you think about it, what other gig does he have to rely on? Nothing. Before being hired by JY\TS, nobody really knew of him outside of Canada. Of course he is going sugar coat, embellish or overstate reality since this is his only meal ticket.

True. According to JY on the Bob and Tom Show broadcast in 99 he is a platinum seller in England and Canada in his own right. Much harder to achieve that here. It's not a bad interview and he's always humble, but you all know how I feel about the current position he holds. I was just glad for the few times Genesis was mentioned.

Admittedly, I don't know much about Gowan and his impact on the Canadian music scene before joining Styx, but I did stumble across this list of his accomplishments, awards, and nominations. It is pretty impressive.

http://atlanta.thebackstagebeat.com/201 ... owan-styx/

Not knowing anything about the Canadian music scene compared to the U.S., I wonder why it is that some Canadian acts don't cross over well here, and there are probably U.S. acts that don't cross over there. We are connected countries; I wouldn't think it would be difficult, but who am I to know. Does anyone know why there is such a chasm between the music of both countries?

And, how many Grammy nominations has Dennis, or anybody else in Styx, received?

And, you skipped, these, which are NOT nominations:

On November 16, 1998, Gowan received the prestigious National Achievement Award from the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).

In 2003, Gowan was presented with the SOCAN award (along with three other musicians) for songs that have surpassed the 100,000 radio airplay mark for his song, “Moonlight Desires”.

Who cares, Styx without Dennis is useless, he still sounds great, stupid fools......

Gowan's solo success pales in comparison to Styx'. So it really doesn't matter. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

Success is relative to the region. Gowan had about the same success in Canada as Styx did in the USA. He had two MASSIVE albums in Canada in the 80's along with a HUGE comeback album in the mid 90's.

Not sure that is necessarily the case. You don't need to sell 1,000,000 albums in Canada to get platinum. So platinum in Canada != platinum in the USA.

I guess DDY is equally a big of a solo star in Canada for his live album which went platinum in canada and triple platinum in video.

Nice try. Styx was known WORLDWIDE, Gowan really only saw success in his home Country. I still say that pales in comparison to Styx.

OK if you say so. But, it's really obvious that Styx had a much more successful run then Gowan did alone. If you can't see or comprehend that I don't know what to tell you.

Big deal 10 nominations and 10 loses , So What

Gowan's solo success pales in comparison to Styx'. So it really doesn't matter. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

Success is relative to the region. Gowan had about the same success in Canada as Styx did in the USA. He had two MASSIVE albums in Canada in the 80's along with a HUGE comeback album in the mid 90's.

Nice try. Styx was known WORLDWIDE, Gowan really only saw success in his home Country. I still say that pales in comparison to Styx.

Apples and oranges.

You got that right. Gowan's solo career is not even in the same league that Styx was.

So by your system Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are some of the best things in music.

Currently, as far as sales figures and concert attendance goes... yes. Are they good... not to me, it's not my type of music. Unfortunately the type of music I prefer is left to like a loose cult following now. But the 2 acts you name do not contribute anything substantial or offer anything to the fabric of music or its future.

I don't see the point for EITHER side of this.

NONE of the members of Styx had a solo career to compare to Styx. And, Gowan's solo career was more successful then either Tommy's or Dennis.

The reality is if a solo career determines who should be a member of Styx, then Gowan stands out as THE person who should be there above Dennis, Tommy, or JY.
