Your mistaken, the crickets you hear is when JY did his back words satanic messages rant before Snowblind. BTW, Does Tommy still do that little tid bit before Crystal Ball where he tells the audience "this is just for you tonight" ? Funny he did that for everybody every night. Wow, don't you feel special now.

At least he keeps it short.

Actually, I always had the impression that though obviously fully ingrained into the band by now, Larry is pretty much a "hired gun." A keyboard player and vocalist. He does a decent number of songs per show, but looks like the majority goes to Tommy, still. And Larry certainly isn't calling the shots... why are people suddenly referring to him as "the front man" of Styx? He replaced the former front man, to be sure... but isn't that really Tommy's position these days?

I know, or referred to as lead singer. Gowan IS a hired gun brought on to fill a vacancy. He is NOT a front man or lead singer. He is a keyboardist and vocalist. You are right when you say that Tommy is the front man or lead singer.

If he is a 'hired gun', then why does he talk about being a part of the "Democracy" of Styx. If he is just an employee, I wouldn't think he has a vote.

Whether you like it or not, he IS a lead singer...That is just a fact. I don't see how anybody can deny that.

Styx has never had one true 'frontman'. Calling Dennis the frontman is a farce because he spent so much time behind the keys and others take the lead on so many songs.

Styx has shared the 'frontman' duties between the three lead singers. JY and Gowan take on that role less often...but it is a shared duty.

Tommy is the lead singer of the band. JY and Gowan sing lead on a few songs... big difference. Tommy is the frontman. I don't see how anyone could deny that. In the past when Dennis was in the band... he and Tommy "shared" those duties. That is a fact.

My post wasn't intended as Gowan-bashing, it was just a legitimate question. As someone stated above, yes he sings lead on some songs, and maybe even at moments acts as A front man, as you say... I was posing a question about others, especially media, referring to Gowan as THE front man, or THE new lead singer... Being in the band 13 years, I am sure the guys take his opinions into account, hence part of the democracy of Styx. And he's showed, good or bad, that he's in for the long haul. But I don't see him as "THE" anything but keyboardest. It's not a slam, just an observation. He has a stage presence of his own, sure, but this does not make him the front man...

Sorry but, I do not believe for a minute that is why they haven't included Best of Times or Rockin' The Paradise in their set list for years. It's clearly because Gowan just doesn't have the ability to pull off those songs. These are staple songs that are from their biggest selling album. It does not make sense for them to avoid them for any other reason. I can certainly see why they have chosen to avoid Babe. They have such a stigma about that song. Even if they did play Babe I doubt that Gowan would be able to pull that one off either.

Yeah, that one...the one that opened their concerts for years and was a top 10 rock track and one of the first videos ever shown on MTV. Gowan can't pull it off.

Unless it has changed, everyone in Styx but Tommy and JY are contract players and not members. There is no real "democracy" in Styx. There used to be a five-way vote in the distant past. Now, Tommy and JY decide what is going to happen and present the schedule to the others. The other guys get paid to show up and do it. Just like every other classic rock band with replacements. Why on earth would they make them equal members? That would be utterly stupid on their part.

None of which is a shot at anyone. Those guys earn good money doing a gig they like. What do they have to complain about in the grand scheme of things?

I could see making Gowan an equal member to remove any incentive he may have to walk away and be solo. If they want to keep him forever, that's what they should do. I don't think that would be a stupid decision...I think it would be the right thing to do.

Now, Todd and Ricky are a bit more disposable by the nature of their positions. If either of them walk away, it's not an issue to replace them. If Gowan walks away, they are back into replacing Dennis mode...and that is not good for anybody involved in the band.

They'd be into replacing Gowan mode. More people have seen Styx with him than with Dennis.

Well haven't here in a while, nice to see it's the same shit different year.

I like Gowan just fine. Prefer Dennis, but that ain't happening.

So yet again, no new studio songs from the "Greatest Line up Ever."

No new music from DDY.

No interest/ability/record label to distribute any possible new music.

DDY camp -vs- Nu Styx camp.

Same songs played over and over and over again with a medley mixed in.

No Roboto/Babe/Rockin' the Paradise/Best of Times live anymore... Unless it's Japan or someone cuts a check or Dennis redoes it and puts it in a commercial.

JY will bash Roboto, but still does the guitar intro to tease the audience.

Dennis playing piano on Rockin' The Paradise. He doesn't do it most of the time because he enjoys running around the state. You can't do that unless you use the same keyboard that Cameo plays.

I disagree with that. When Journey lost Augeri, they tried replacing him with JSs....that didn't work. They had to resort to getting a guy who could mimic Steve Perry to get them out of the mess they were in. They had to go back to replacing Steve Perry.

The same would happen to Styx. The public, the parts that still care anyway, would wonder who would be singing Dennis' songs....Not who will be singing the songs Gowan used to sing.

It doesn't matter how many people Gowan has performed to...he was not in the band in 198x when Styx was most popular and cemented memories into peoples head. Whoever is in that position is replacing Dennis...not Gowan, or somebody else in the future.

Don't get me wrong either...I think Gowan was the perfect choice. He should be there until Styx comes to an end. Dennis shouldn't...he screwed things up, in many ways.
