Photos from Styx at Manchester, UK in June 2011

Postby MartyMoffatt » Sat Sep 03, 2011 8:29 pm

I know it's nearly three months late, but I only just got around to editing these pics last night, from the Styx show in Manchester back in June, supporting Foreigner and Journey.

Marty, what kind of camera and lens(es) do you use to shoot concert photos with? Also, what speed do you shoot at? Thanks.

I mostly shoot with a Canon 5D and a number of different zoom lenses covering a range from 20mm to 200mm, using either shutter priority or manual settings. As to speed, it varies with the lighting. My optimum shutter speed is around 1/160 to 1/200, if the lighting permits it. If not I might go down to 1/125 or even 1/60 (I rarely go below that, even with image stabilised lenses). The amount of light changes significantly depending on the show, and individual songs within the show, and your position in relation to the stage. There are very few hard and fast rules and you simply have to take a few test shots, check them on the screen and adjust your settings accordingly.

And is Phillips wearing eyeliner?

The eyeliner makes perfect sense. It goes along with Styx as a whole. Stuck in their past cuz they cannot do anything new.

OK so it's no big deal. Maybe he is trying to get Chuck's attention or maybe it's a tribute to Chuck. 8)

Didn't hair spray go out with the hair bands and the 80s?
