DeYoungs "Desert moon" - Is it any good?

Postby BRETT5150 » Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:57 pm

I've just bought this off amazon, $6.99. a cheap find. never expected it to be that low of a price. I've just wondering what others think of it. i have'nt heard any of the tracks. i'm just completing my styx and related catalogue.
only need "edge of the centuary" and the new "regeneration" cd's.

4 really good songs- Dont Wait For Hereos, Gravity, Desert Moon & Dear Darling. The rest of the album is below average at best. Still those 4 are excellent.

Edge of The Century is EXCELLENT. Get it as soon as you have the cash. Also, purchase Glen Burtnik's 'Welcome To Hollywood' & Tommy Shaw's '7 Deadly Zens' along with DDY's 'One Hundred Years From Now' are by faaarrrrr their best solo efforts.

I agree with Yogi.

Get "One Hundred Years from Now", "7 Deadly Zens" and "Welcome to Hollywood".
Absolutely the best solo efforts from Dennis, Tommy and Glen. Although you cannot go wrong with Any of Glen's solo albums. They are all excellent. But "Welcome to Hollywood" is a masterpiece.

I'm one of the few people who still think Desert Moon is his best - except for maybe Hunchback (most people like "100 Years From Now" better). i think all 8 songs are great. "Boys will be Boys" is horribly dated though, but I really did like it back in 1984 when I was 17.

It's a good purchase. You did well.

Actually "Back To The World" and "Boomchild" are better, IMHO. I love the title track to "Desert Moon" and a few other songs, like "Please" and "Gravity," but think the other two have better songs (albeit a little dated also). "Hunchback" is great but hard to find, and i've only listened to "100 Years" a few times and not really caring much for it :?

the problem is all of the early solo stuff is filled with a lot of mediocre pop music that does not stand the test of time well at all.

It's an OK album, but not anything super special. You'll find something to like on it....but, a year or so from now...eh.

of all the posts mentioned, i only have "7 deadly zens", but I think Tommys "Ambition" is better from '87. Thats a classic album.

I haven't listened to Ambition in probably 20 years! I only had it on LP and Tape. Never did get the CD.
But I agree it was a really good album.

It was a disappointment to me that "Desert Moon" was not a stronger album. Actually, DDY's Ultimate Collection CD does have some of his best work on it from those 3 early solo albums.

Not sure if it can still be purchased, but it is a good way to have a sampling of some of the good songs from DM, BTTW, and Boomchild.

Overall, it's a good album, but it is dated too. There are a few songs on there that aren't great, but Dennis solo stuff is kind of spotty anyway. Mostly it's a good one.
