NOTES- For the 2nd time in 3 years STYX (they were here in 2008), headlined Day #2 of the NEX RIBFEST. Not much new as far as the setlist goes, it was nice to see original bassist Chuck Panozzo join the band for 3 songs. The band sounded extremely great and weather was fantastic. Attendance was probably close to 20,000 by the time STYX took the stage for their 80 minute set. Tampa's guitar army The Outlaws opened and their set included southern rock favorites "Green Grass & High Tides", "There Goes Another Love Song" , "Hurry Sundown", and "Ghost Riders in The Sky"

Doesn't the venue, or booking agent, or whomever, determine the length of the show? I'm not sure how all that works.

I think they have a say, but for some reason all of the venues wanted 25-26 songs back in 1999. Not now...so I think that the band does have some say in it. Although hearing Gowan butcher Rockin' The Paradise and Best of Times probably led to reduced set times.

Yes the venue determines how long they have to play. They could play 4hrs a night if they wanted to.

Saw Bruce Springsteen once, in one of those 4 hour marathon shows and it got pretty tedious after about 2 hours.

I've seen Springsteen and Paul McCartney twice, each time each played 3+ hour-long sets, and I enjoyed all of them. Great shows! I think with a lot of acts, all that time would become tedious, but not for The Boss and Macca. I've never seen a Styx show that was longer than 2 hours, so I don't know if they would become tedious or not. I don't think they would be.

Actually, I'd love to see a 3+hour Shaw Blades acoustic set. With all their songs, stories, and audience interaction, it would be a great show.

Mmm if you delete the cover songs, which aren't "their songs" they don't have enough material for three hours. Don't get me wrong I loved the first Shaw\Blades album. When I heard that they were making another album, I got excited. Then my bubble burst when I found out it was a bunch of covers. Now there is a rumor of another album of covers. This is one thing that I do not care for about Tommy, his seeming love for cover songs. I think allot of Shaw\Blades fans would rather have an album of new songs then more covers. As far as Springsteen goes sorry but, I can't stand his music, never did. love McCartney.

To each his own as they say. I'm just not a fan of covers. I enjoyed their original material which is what got me to like the collaboration, not them doing other artist's material. A song or two mixed with original material I am OK with. But, I am tired of hearing the retreads and covers. I guess fresh new material is too much for fan to ask for.

The venue determines the length of the set or stage time for a package. Most venues are contenty with 90 mnute shows. What stops Styx from playing the higher number of songs in the set is how long they have stretched the songs out for. Every song is almost 7 minutes or more. IF they played the songs like they were originally written, then Styx would get 20+ songs in a 2 hour set. But Styx and its fans today are use to the longer versions.

Yeah, and they themselves cut those shows so short because they (and nobody else) could hear them play, due to all the hysterical screaming. Basically, all those screamers wanted was to see The Beatles shake their moptops! George Harrison once said, "They gave their screams...we gave our souls."
