Styx perfoming at Improv on Ice

Postby Rockwriter » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:37 am

I hope I'm not re-posting this, but I didn't see a topic about it . . .

http://www.examiner.com/classic-hard-ro ... rov-on-ice

You know, I'm not against this, per se, and it could be interesting . . . but I AM surprised the band is doing it after they have tried so hard to brand themselves away from the Dennis-type things. Let me get this straight . . . KILROY was bad, but FIGURE SKATING is what this band wants to be associated with? I'm not sure I see eye-to-eye with them on that.

I hope all is well.

Wait until Gowan starts belting out lines from the Styx classic 'Come Skate Away'.

This skating gig ought to really play well into the jewelry line that Styx is now after.

This has happened because the band has agreed to sleep in a bed made by JY and Tommy. Soon they will be playing backyard kiddy parties...and not be able to sell them out.

This is embarrassing. These guys are a joke without Dennis. I'm sorry, but they have become KISS-like Whores.
I was upset originally when Dennis sued them but now I get it. I'd sue them also if I were him just for destroying the Styx name.
There is now a generation of fans who think this circus act is really Styx. That's friggin sad.

"If hockey sticks and pucks are allowed, I’d be happy to take a turn with the skaters," Gowan said. "However, my triple axels are now more a fluke occurrence than true artistry, so I think I’ll be quite content to let the pro’s handle their art, and we’ll rock."

So, does that mean that they are playing ice-hockey on the river Styx?[/i]

This does not surprise me at all. As far as Kilroy goes, if they felt there was no way that project would work they could have just out voted Dennis to go ahead with it.

When I first heard about this, maybe a month ago, I sorta cringed, but I don't think this is as low a low as seeing Def Leppard on Dancing With the Stars. Now, THAT was truly cringe-worthy.

I've seen other skating shows with bands, and they aren't too terribly bad. The irony in this particular show is that Styx has stepped into "Barry Manilow territory"--he performed on a skating show years ago that was televised.
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

Maybe they are doing this because NBC will televise the show nationally on January 15. Improv-Ice is part of the Pandora NBC Skating series. This is 2 weeks before the new DVD comes out.

My bad. There is so much angst and power inside wanting to escape, I know how powerful the ice capades are.

Styx TRULY wants to rock and ice skating and hard rock music have always gone together. Dennis always held them back in this regard. Styx is a ROCK band and now without Dennis they have found their venue( ice skating) to release their angst.

Who knows, but if the funds are there maybe they can purchase some commericial time and sell a little jewelry while they are at it.

What a COMPLETE and TRULY UTTER FARCE!!!!!!

P.S. If possible look for Styx to try to ink a contract for doing the background music for one or all of those Bravo Housewives shows.

So tell me Chicago (aka the great defender)...

Clearly they will have to play (gasp!) some ballads for a skating show.

Now is it ok for this "hard rock" outfit to play ballads as long as you've sold out to be on a skating show? If so, does that mean that "Babe" is now okay to play? "Don't Let It End"? "Best of Times"? "Show Me The Way"? Because God knows that no one is skating to Miss America. Is it now okay for Gowan to warble out ballads since "we'll be on TV"?

I guess in your mind that the means justify the end. In other words, we can play the (was it"cringe inducing ballads", JY,?) Dennis songs because it gets us on TV, but then we can also slam them when it is in our best interest to do so? We can appear on female oriented ice skating shows reminiscent of "Barry Manilow" territory as long as we get exposure?

Or is it really that for the 1000th time that Tommy Shaw and JY are showing how full of shit they really are?

Toph, if it was Dennis (who is more fitting for this) you'd be wetting your pants. Why do you get so upset by anybody standing up for Styx? Gees. Take a Mydol.

To fans of Styx as a R O C K band, this isn't great news. As a promotion for them, it's good news.
As I said up in the Journey forum, if the band is not concentrating on new music and is selling jewelry, they might
as well take it all the way and do Styx on ice. That kind of goes together. As a rock fan, I think it's a dopey combination. I still remember them hauling out KISS on a float for the Olympics a few years ago. What an embarrassment. They had the Goo Goo Dolls on the same NBC show and you could tell they were a bit uncomfortable. However, I watched it, so others will watch this.
To me, it's just disappointing, but what do I know?

I have no problem with best of times or show me the way, never have. First time I hope I never hear again! I also don't like she cares, nothing ever goes as planned, or Eddie.

There are other bands doing the impov ice thing, maybe even a few you like.

This may help them sell a few more PO8/GI DVDs.

I'm going to watch it and will also watch this Sunday to see Chicago. They have a new Christmas CD to promote.

Do I feel the same way about other artists? it depends. You honestly tell me if you think that Styx has COMPLETELY sold out.

Let's look at Styx: They removed Dennis partly because "They want to ROCK'.They are a rock band that because of Dennis and his musical theatre could no longer really rock. They want to be a hard rock band. Is this the type of venture that a 'ROCK' band or hard rock band does???

They have not put out an album since the VERY VERY good Cyclorama. So what do they do instead of new music???
Jewelry.

I always thought creative people need to create. I just never thought my favorite rock band would create jewelry instead of new material. I also thought they would never kick out their greatest creative force- and one of the founding members of the band because he no longer was truly a 'rock guy' and then years later the kicker outers do background music for an ice capades show.

It is a true an utter joke how hypocritical JY, Tommy, Chuck and the rest of them are. They have gotten fooled by the radio, TV, internet & magazines. They have sold out in a way Dennis never even dreamed of.

Coffee, jewelry, ice capades....... No new music....... I sooooo wanted to purchase their Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight CD/DVD but I will NEVER now. I would have also purchased a copy for my brother as a present. Not another dime goes into what was once by farrrr my favorite band. What they have become now is a money grubbing anyway possible enterprise.

The music no longer matters to them. Now is the time Dennis should sue their asses.

Trivia Question: Of the following two, which one was the great soundbite JY echoed on Behind The Music A)'When they are playing hockey on the River Styx' or B) 'when Tommy and I play background music for Dorthy Hammel while wearing our very own Styx designed jewelry in the ice capades'????

They also did not want to keep waiting around for him to play Styx with them. They want to be a full time band, DDY was only using Styx as something to do in between his hair brain schemes/projects. I personally spoke to Dennis at boarders when Tommy was doing his 7DZ promo and I asked him what was next for Styx. He said and I quote " there has been enough Styx for a while"!

I fully supported this version of Styx until NOW. I have seen them close to a dozen times and purchased most of their music. Even the regirgitated same ol' stuff re done 20 different ways. I own their 2 disc 40 greatest renditions of Blue Collar Man. I even let my son go dressed up as Dr. Rightous on Halloween. I am a TRUE die hard Styx fan. No more.

I would like a full update and alert if Tommy or JY drives the Zamboni during their Ice Capades intermisson. I hope their manager informs them to not let the sheer speed of the Zamboni fool them. It's a bitch to drive.

Skate away boyz with full jewelry and dont let Todds drums hit you on the backside!!!!

If you are going to let this type of stuff effect how you enjoy the music, then you spend way too much time on the Internet scrapping for news about a band that doesn't have much real news to give you.
