Well, correction here....They didn't wait for Perry. The entire band was already together, with the exception of Perry, and ready to record...songs were already being written. Kevin Chalfant was replacing him, and Gregg Rolie was in the band, too. Perry was touring solo for FTLOSM and basically, Sony wanted him in Journey and offered a deal to Perry and Journey to get him back. So, I don't think his heart was truly dedicated to Journey...I think he wanted to be solo.
Now, AFTER that, the band waited and waited for Perry to do the TBF reunion tour and Perry wouldn't tour because of his hip, wouldn't get surgery, and everything was delayed. The band got tired of waiting and came to a legal agreement to replace him.
One thing of interest here is that way back then Tommy wrote on his blog that he actually called and talked to Jonathan Cain for advice on replacing lead singers. He did not really elaborate on it much...just said they talked. I always thought it was to get advice on hiring a soundalike, or somebody who different, or what...especailly since they already had Gowan as a possibility. Don't know what Jonathan said to him.
