NEVER SAY NEVER - My 100% Bad

Postby yogi » Thu Feb 02, 2012 2:35 am

When I got home last night my wife & kids suprised me with the new Styx 'Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight DVD/CD. They insisted we all watch it after dinner.

One word - GREAT!!

I vow to NEVER rip the current band or Dennis EVER again. What is 100% apparent is this band put on an EPIC show that was brilliant and they all did complete justice to EVERY song played. It is by far the BEST music video concert I have ever seen. I now cant wait until I get a chance to listen to both CD's of the show.

These two albums were classics back then and they even sounded better live now.

Dennis was at his 100% best on both of these. Even though he is absent, Gowan & Styx did his songs justice. The lyrics on I'm OK and Pieces Of Eight are as solid and poetic as anything Dennis ever did. They were sooo spot on and meaningful back in the 70's and they are ever so meaningful today. Gowan is brilliant in delivering these songs.

Tommy's voice sounds as smooth as ever and the band harmonies are pitch perfect. Superstars was 100% AWESOME!

Todd is a monster and the entire bands performance is PERFECT.

NEVER again will I rip my favorite band!

My only suggestion is that they could mend fences with Dennis so that Styx goes out and plays these two albums again in their entirety with the EXACT show starting at 7pm and then Dennis and his band follows with Cornerstone and Paradise Theatre.

What a night that would be!!!

I echo your sentiment, yogi. This DVD and performance is really brilliant on every level. Styx put on an amazing show, and the video/audio quality is REALLY good. I was up late last night watching it over and over, just awstruck. A lot of reviewers don't know what to say. They were expecting to slam the band and Lawrence, but they're not able to, and you can tell that they're at a loss for words. Styx really knocked this one out of the park. Wishing that this propels them to a lot of new success this year. I can't wait to see them again and I LOVE Dennis's band a lot and cannot wait to see them either. It's good to be a Styx fan.

Then you have never seen Pink Floyd's "Pulse", David Gilmour's "Remember That Night" or "Live in Gdansk", or Genesis' "When in Rome". I'm a huge Styx fan, but please.

I enjoyed the whole dvd. The special features with the crew were great. Very interesting to learn about the technical side of the show.

Anyone who is into guitars will like the special features. It's almost too much info about each guitar and rig and how it all works. I liked it but if you're not into that stuff you may not lfind it interesting.

Is there a special feature on how they get Gowan's keyboard to spin?

After Eddie Murphy did his Delirious tour he was quoted as saying 'it is all about the material'. Current Styx had AWESOME material for this tour and they did NOT screw it up.

Dennis, Tommy, JY, Chuck and John should be praised for inventing such GREAT material.

Tommy, JY, Chuck, Lawerence, Ricky & Todd should be praised for delivering it 30 years later with ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!

Watch it.

I almost ALWAYS hate watching concerts on TV. Not this one. You get to hear two GREAT GREAT albums back to back. It is almost like you are hearing it for the first time 30+ years ago.

Superstars, Man In The Wilderness I'm OK & Pieces of Eight are done to pure PERFECTION.

All I can tell you is watch it.

Watched the Blu-ray and IMO it`s one of the best if not the best live videos I`ve seen. The Picture and sound are excellent but the performance is
wonderful, nothing is perfect, JY struggles vocally at times and Gowan is no DDY but they perform admirably and do the two brilliant albums justice.

Stand outs for me are Man In The Wilderness, Castle Walls, Intro to Miss America,Queen Of Spades, Pieces of Eight and Aku Aku.

If you genuinely like Styx then this will be a must buy/watch but if you can`t get over the fact DDY is elsewhere then you`re missing out on something special.

Just watch the video Boom & others. It's only a concert. No one is asking you to eat you young.

At about the 4:13 mark in Sing For The Day (CD)( which I am also sure is DVD also - seems like the same exact concert) does Tommy call out to JY sing it Big Bird???

GREAT GREAT GREAT concert!!!!!
