Need your help, song for a Mother-Son dance at a Wedding?

Postby Jodes » Mon May 14, 2012 3:17 pm

As you may or may not know, I don't frequent these boards much any more unless I find it absolutely important to post. Around this time last year a community in my home Province of Alberta was decimated, and I asked for help.

This year, well its a lot more personal.

Some of you may also know that I lost my father to cancer nearly 5 years ago, and during that time my mom was diagnosed with Dementia/Alzeimers. Its now got to the point where she really doesn't recognize anyone any more and her physical condition is starting to slow down as well.

I'm getting married next June and we realized that I won't be able to dance with my mother on my wedding day she just won't be able to. So I've decided in the very near future to rent a tux, have the staff at the nursing home my mom is at dress her up and we are going to film us having this very special moment, so that we can show it at the wedding. I'm not going to dance with a "fill in" it has to be her. She deserves that much.

I just haven't got a clue what song to dance to.

Right now the short list includes "When I See You Smile" and possibly "The Best Of Times".

If there are any suggestions, please let me know.

This really means a lot to me.

Thanks.

When (my now ex and) I got married, he and his mom danced to "You And Me Against the World" by Helen Reddy :)

And when I think the boards can't be all that bad and haven't the foggiest on why people would leave, I read this.

I personally don't care if you think that its a joke and "no harm was done".. Ha ha ha "its funny cause they can't remember! Bullshit.

I hope you NEVER have watch a loved one have to go through this disease, to see their souls stripped away until they are left with an empty shell one step above being a vegetable, and know that there's not a damn thing you can do to stop its progression. Then there's the physical deterioration in the later stages. There is no remission, no regression.

All I wanted was some suggestions so that possibly the last dance I have with my mother would be a special one, and I get this. How fucking lovely.

From the bottom of my heart I sincerely apologize. Looking objectively you must be able to realize that not being able to remember Mr Roboto would be one of the small upsides to this terrible disease.

I video and produce a good many wedding dvd's for people and I get to see what others bring me in the way of music for slideshows. Not sure what type of music genres you are looking for, but here are a few choices that I have seen.

Uncle Kracker - Smile
Shania Twain - From This Moment On
Scotty McCreery - I Love You This Big
Carrie Underwood - Mamas Song
Lee Brice - Love Like Crazy
heartland - i loved her first
Blake Shelton - God Gave Me You
"Don't fall into the trap, DEMOCRATS are full of CRAP"........Jack Lemon

Thank you for your input everyone, but after listening to many of the songs, we have decided to stick with "When I See You Smile".

Although its message is supposedly to one's significant other, everything Mr. Waite sings about in that song I could relate to in my relationship with my mother.

And with that.. Gr8whitehope. My mother and father never wanted me to fight or wish harm upon others. I will forgive you for your comments, because thats just the way I was raised. I just hope you truely understand how hurtful and heartless your words were, and that you will in the future think about what you post.

Best Regards All and Thanks again.

I just wanted to let you all know that mom had a heart attack on July 1st. There was some damage to her heart, but the doctors believe it wasn't very bad, but with her condition we agreed not to go with more intrusive tests, since that might stress her out more. It really puts things into perspective when something like this happens, and you feel so helpless because she's not able to communicate and tell you what is wrong.

I am still hoping in a few weeks to do the dance with her now that I have the summer off.

BTW, I know you already chose a song...But, Journey's "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" would also be perfect.

I know this is almost 3 years old.. the Song I chose was "When I See You Smile".

The last posting I made was that mom, who was suffering from Dementia had a mild heart attack. I had every intention of renting a tux and dancing with her, but with so many of us, I got busy and put it off. In January 2013, my mom fell and broke her hip, and with her advanced condition, wasn't able to do rehab. She was at my wedding (I rolled her down the isle before I said my vows) but I wasn't able to stay for the dinner/reception afterwords.

My sister took her place as we danced to Bad English. It still breaks my heart to this day that I put it off due to my schedule.

So what's the point of my post? Life is precious. Don't take it for granted, because those you love could be unable to be with you to really no fault of their own, or they could be gone at a moment's notice. Cherish the time you have, and tell those who you love how you feel.. Many don't understand alzeimers/dementia.. many think one gets forgetful and shrug it off. They don't see that it takes EVERYTHING that was that person away from those who are closest to you, and then it takes them away physically.

Gr8White.. A thousand times after I got married I wanted to tell you "FUCK YOU" but that would have been just me lashing out due to my mother's condition . I do forgive you. It's all good. It's taken me a long time to move on, but I have. I just wanted to let you know. It's one of the reason's why I haven't been around the boards as well.

Now I let you go about your usual Styx vs DDY ramblings.

Best Regards
Jody

My mother passed away just under 3 hours ago from a sudden illness (not Covid) and yesterday and today I sat by her bedside (here in Northern Alberta we were allowed in to see her) and played her favorite songs/artists - Neil Diamond, Alan Jackson, Garth, CCR, Fogerty Buddy Holly, Rolling Stones, etc. Today I held her hand and played her the song we were supposed to dance to at my wedding - Bad English's When I See You Smile.

The last song that I played for her was Elvis's "Can't Help Falling In Love". We were with her when she passed.

She suffered for 14 years with Dementia and Alziemers. It took everything from her day after day.. year after year. She didn't deserve a day of it.

So the next time you crack a joke about it.. please just remember that it's it could be someone's mother, aunt, sister, daughter, father, son, brother, uncle. It's not funny. Never has. Never Will Be.

Stay Safe.
