Second Shock of the Day - I bought it

Postby Keiferb » Sun Aug 05, 2012 10:30 am

OK, I admit it. I bought the Gi/PO8 DVD back in the early spring. I never posted about it, because it seemed so hypocritical, I was not interested in starting another war of words. However, since I've now completely demonstrated myself as wishy-washy as it pertains to this band, it's safe now. Some facts as I perceived them:

- I bought the DVD on a whim for $10. I walked by it in WALMART. What was another $10 on top of the other $150 in the cart?
- Brace yourselves - I DIDN'T HATE IT.
* I thought Tommy's songs were incredibly well done. He sounds as great as ever.
* JY sounds like he has phlegm. Thankfully, he blended pretty well w/the rest.
* I thought most of Gowan's performances were "OK". Makes me wonder how much post production "editing" was performed.
* I thought Gowan's rendition of GI was as horrible as ever. I almost turned the damn thing off. I'm glad I didn't.
* Given GI was first, I feel I've definitely given him benefit of the doubt.
- I did hate the screen saver effect of the videos used. Although, I did like the end into Aku Aku (or however it's spelled).

Froy would dis me forever I'm sure. At the end of the day, none of this changes any of my opinions.

I saw one of these shows when they toured, I doubt any studio fix-em ups were done. The show I saw was an almost identical copy of the dvd, (except at the show I saw Tommy missed the first line of one of the Po8 Songs) I agree, LG does't do as well on GI as I would hope, but I though he nailed it on Queen of Spades. LG sounded excellent at the show I saw which was a few weeks before the one that was taped.

Ending the show with Aku-Aku was kind of risky but it was so fitting if, like me you are fan of Po8. That little bit at the end really does belong there.

I don't think wanting to see this performance makes you wishy-washy. I can see someone being interested to see it even if they are not that thrilled with certain member replacements or the behind the scenes politics of the band. Personally, I have no interest in giving this version of the band one dime of my money and I do not expect everyone else to feel exactly the same.

I have it too and it isn't bad for 10 bucks. Tommy delivers as you said. Notice how JY introduces "superstars" as "superDARS". His voice isn't there but then again he isn't 35 anymore.

Gowan sang the hell out of Pieces of Eight. I thought it was brilliant.

Man In The Wilderness is what I have to say about that tour and this DVD 8)

I would concur that PO8 came off quite well (actually one of my favorite songs from the show). I won't, however, make the leap that Gowan sang the hell out of it. I can only go so far. :)

Now I've really gone to the dark side.....I used an emoticon.

Speaking of wishy washy and dark Sides, I saw two of those shows and still haven't bought the DVD.

I've also got third row seats for Dennis DeYoung on Monday. What is this world coming to?

Oh right. It's not 1999 anymore.

Anyway, Tommy nailed Man in the Wilderness, and I thought Gowan did a brilliant job on QoS, Po8, and Castle Walls (especially Castle Walls).

The only thing I did NOT enjoy was JY's soliloquy during "Superstars." I wanted to scream. Not because he sounded bad, but he changed all the words. i don't even know WTF he was saying. Why? I don't understand. At first I thought he just forgot the words, but he did the same thing again the following night. meh.

Everything else was dead-on-balls accurate.
