Regarding the lawsuit and a new album...

Postby St.George » Sat Jul 14, 2012 5:53 am

Extracted from a recent interview with Steve Lukather:

Do you anticipate another Toto studio album?
SL: Not at this time. We have a moron suing us for rights and it is truly insane and stealing money we would normally by giving to our brother Mike Porcaro who is suffering from ALS and not doing so well… To pay lawyer bills. There must be a special place in hell for people like this. All I can say now. For the time being we can play LIVE and help him and we have a lot of touring in the next few years with Toto for our 35th anniversary so look out. We may actually do USA dates. New manager and agents…

Does anyone know what's going on here? Is it because of Frontiers that we don't get another TOTO album?

Mario, from Frontiers records, explained over on The Noticeboard that TOTO is under contract with them since Falling in Between, and that they have first dibs for any new material the band puts out. Hence, the hold-up over the latest concert dvd. Frontiers claims that is their property, and not Mascot records (who was going to release it).

Glad to hear they have new agents/mngmt. TOTO should be much bigger than they are. Everyone knows the timeless songbook, ("Africa", "Hold the Line", "Roseanna" etc etc) and yet the band remains strangely faceless and anonymous in the US.

I don't get it. This is getting funnier by the minute. I mean "Falling in Between Live" wasn't released by Frontiers, if memory serves me right. So why has this issue been raised now?

Didn't Frontiers handle FIB internationally?

And Toto claim the contract lapsed and isn't valid. So now the courts decide - at least that verdict can't be argued with and will hopefully see both parties move forward.

Only people winning here is the lawyers.

"FIB" was handled by Frontiers, indeed. "Falling in Bewteen Live" is an Eagle Records release.

I don't get it. How come Frontiers didn't claim rights for the FiB live album? And, do we know the length of the binding contract, according to Frontiers? It's just crazy that we don't get a dvd from these recent tours. Mammon...

Gotta love how Luke pumps out these depressing solo albums once a month, yet is perfectly happy to let TOTO become a county fair punchline like REO and STYX.
Let's go already!

How is every 2 years ONCE A MONTH?

Dude, for someone who is normally very rational and reasonable, you are really going off the hook with this? WTF is the issue with you?

Great. And the last TOTO album came out in 2006. Most of the Luke/Goodrum collaborations on Steve's cds are obvious TOTO songs in disguise. I really don't know why they are wasting their legacy. Since regrouping in 1999, the band has done two original releases (not counting the covers cd). That is horrible. Journey has been more prolific. So has Meat Loaf (with more to come). I only want the best.

TNC, that's not really fair. You're missing the fact that Toto officially broke up in 2008 and that was it.

The only reason Toto came back in 2010 and continues to do so summer after summer is to pay tribute to Mike and honor him. That's it. The Toto from 1978 to 2008 and the Toto from 2010 to Present should really be treated as two different bands.

I've enjoyed Luke's solo albums quite a bit, but I can't help but wish a few of the tunes had ended up on a Toto album with the other singers, and Dave & Simon. I'm just glad he's putting out new music though, since he seems to be the only former Toto member still doing so (other than Simon's jazz projects).

IMO, it's just a pity that the current line-up don't make an effort to release, if not a complete album, at least one single song for their 35th anniversary. It's been more than 20 years since Steve P. and Joseph Williams left the band for the first time, so now they're back together, it would be tragic not to record new stuff.

Couldn't agree more!! You guys aren't getting any younger Luke, and we never know how much time we have on this earth. For such an amazingly gifted group of guys to get back together and not release some new material... that's just criminal. :?

Everchanging Times was about 80% TOTO to my ears, I think it would have been done with TOTO if not for the Frontiers thing. I prefer something more along the lines of Luke for his solo stuff. I haven't heard the last two yet but may check them out. New TOTO would be great...why not give them another cd to fulfill the commitment if there is one, then move on...he'd still have made more money than he probably did for ET.
