Wooden Nickel Recap

Postby Toph » Sat Mar 01, 2014 4:46 am

We've done the four Wooden Nickel albums and will be moving onto the A&M years next. But to recap, provide your top 5 Wooden Nickel era songs.

Here's mine:
1. Lady - The only classic; great song; still love it today
2. Unfinished Song - Love this song - the melody, the verses; oh what might have been; could have been a strong single during the A&M years
3. 22 Years - Upbeat, fun, and a great duet
4. Christopher, Mr. Christopher - Love the melody and the song/chorus sounds very Stygian
5. You Need Love - If only DDY had sung, would have been right up there with some great songs. Love the tune; upbeat and fun.

I'll actually agree with the fact that it would have been an improvement. It's in a key that would suit Dennis' voice and there's no question that he's a much better singer that JY.

My Wooden Nickel Favorites are:

1. Lady
2. Golden Lark
3. Young Man ( JY's BEST ever led Styx tune)
4. What Has Come Between Us
5. The Serpent Is Rising
6. Best Thing
7. Evil Eyes
8. A Day
9. A Song For Suzanne
10. Unfinished Song
11. You Need Love
12. Man Of Miracles
13. The Grove of Englentine

After #13 You can have all the rest of their Wooden Nickel stuff. ( #12 & 13 are a real stretch for me, but I REALLY like #'s 1-11)

music is truly one of the coolest things ever..........the subjectivity of it is incredible.

it is fascinating to see "evil eyes" receive some high praise from multiple people, yet it is literally one of my least favorite tunes by styx ever........doesnt mean I'm right or anyone else is wrong.....it's just wild to see such widely spread opinions on certain tunes.

once again toph, thanks for doing this, it has been one of the coolest things we have ever done around here and I am looking forward to the A & M albums!

No I don't really. It would go right under Grove which is a stretch to say I really like alot. I truly like my top 11. 12 and 13 are a stretch for me and Christopher would even be a little more of a stretch.

Also for me my top 3 Wooden Nickel songs I REALLY REALLY like alot. Lady, Golden Lark and Young Man are 3 of my Styx favorites of all time. They are GREAT songs.

What Has Come Between Us is an Awesome remake. Styx does a great job with this song. Excellent DDY/Styx song. Nirvana(Kurt Cobain) should have done Serpent. To me that was JC's best. GREAT vocal performance by him and the entire band. No mistaken it's Styx when they jump in on the chorus.

Dennis sings his ass off on the dark/moody song Evil Eyes. I really like that. Not many Styx songs have a real mood to them. Evil Eyes does.
