DDY DVD - Probably set list

Postby Kilroy1983 » Tue Mar 18, 2014 4:00 am

This should probably be the set list on the DVD that will be filmed at El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 18. Unfortunately is not included "Born For Adventure". Who knows we have a surprise ....

That would be his biggest songs. Can't argue with any of those. But would be nice to stick a "rarity" on there. These are all the biggest hits that he has played on in his career. Every single one. The "sweet seventeen"

My question is when does AXS plan to air this concert on their channel. I checked their website and there was no mention of it at this point.

I am going to say it - this is by far and away the most definitive Styx set list ever recorded. Every major song is included. There has never been a more complete live compilation - even Return to Paradise since it left off Kilroy tunes. If you were in high school in the late 70s throughout all of the 80s, you would know every single song. Finally one of them comes up with a complete live setlist.

Personally I would have preferred to see some other tunes on the set list such as BFA. Since it was a special event he could have changed it up a little bit. But, these things are geared towards the average or casual fan.

Light Up would be nice also. Maybe even Queen of Spades but I will take it the way it looks. Anything from DDY is good.

I think this is definitely targeted to a general fan - and while us diehards would like the rarity like QoS or LUp, (or BFA or Po8 or OYFN), these are the songs that Joe America will remember. If there was a song on this setlist that you aren't familiar with, you clearly weren't listening to the radio - because every single one of these tunes received huge airplay on either pop, AC, or rock stations.

I think this DVD is going to do very well. Would be nice to have some bonus interviews of Dennis & his band members too. They seem to have a lot of chemistry.

That said, I'm pretty disappointed that OYFN wasn't in the set. Could have been some good exposure for it.

Normally they don't air these specials until it has been released. So it will probably be a while, or at least until we see an official release.

I would agree. But again, if it is a time crunch and this is the limit you can put on, which of these would you cut for OYFN? There is the dilemma. You put a rarity on there and you have to cut a well known song.

I think he could have cut one of the TS penned songs in favor for BFA or QOS. When he has done BFA it seems to me it was very well received even though it's not considered a "hit song".

That's interesting. I would have thought they would want to air it prior to it's release on DVD.

I would not be surprised if the network said we want the core Styx songs. Maybe that is why there is no obscure stuff in there. If he played BFA or QOS then the network will be afraid that people may turn the channel. Who knows. As for the release. I think the DVD will come first. If they air it before the DVD then people will just DVR it and not buy the DVD.

Well since it was made public that it was taped to air on TV I guess some will skip buying the DVD and DVR it anyway. At any rate since it was a staple set list I am not as excited to see it as I was before.

I kind of doubt it. AXS will not air the whole show anyway. Normally they cut several songs from these broadcasts which probably helps drive people to the DVD's to get the complete show. I have yet to see a complete show on AXS. So if he did BFA it would probably be on the DVD but not on the TV broadcast.

The one song you might be able to replace it for a rarity would be Crystal Ball (even though it is a personal favorite) as it is probably not known as well as the others. Maybe Lorelei too - that seems to have become bigger in its post life than when Styx was popular. In fact, I only remember hearing SMB and LUp on the radio on classic rock stations.

An the record company too. Look at its core this is essentially greatest hits 1 + RTP (which should have been on GH1) and Desert Moon subtract Miss America (which given its relative lack of popularity give the other "hits" plus the fact that there is no way DDY has a JY song anywhere near his set list). It's as mainstream as could be so clearly targeted at less serious Styx fan.
