CITA or Edge?

Postby Toph » Fri May 02, 2014 9:34 am

Thinking we'll just stick to Studio albums for the listening party. Outside of Music Time, not sure what else CITA brings. Thoughts? And Then I'll go with the will of the majority. I vote a jump to Edge

Edge. For me CITA just sounds like they are tired which they where. Maybe do live albums in another segment. God knows there are plenty of them.

Edge. Burtnik's songs are the best songs on it.
I actually LIKED Music Time.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I'll go ahead and share my story anyway. And if there are strange typos, sorry I am using my iPod to type this out and sometimes my thumbs don't want to work just right :)

When this first came out I had no idea Styx had a live album coming out. I was at the mall looking at records in the S section and noticed a bunch of new double albums in Springsteen but I didn't actually notice the silver Styx logo. So when I got to Styx I thought "what are all these Bruce albums doing in the Styx section?" Still not noticing the logo (they were packed in there pretty tight). So, as I normally would do in record stores I wanted to file the Styx albums in chronological order (I know I'm not the only one who did this lol!). So I decided to take out all the new Bruce albums and that's when I finally saw the logo. I was blown away! Again I had no idea they had a new live album! I had never heard Styx live before so I was excited. I noticed there was also a new song, Music Time. I didn't get I that day because I didn't have the money. Picked it up a few weeks later on vinyl. I enjoyed all the pictures. First up Music Time. I liked it then and I still like it now. An enjoyable little tune and I even taped it off the radio around this time. It was in heavy rotation at the top 40 station. I still have the tape somewhere where they introduce it as a new song from Styx. Next up Roboto. I thought performance-wise the band sounded awesome. Dennis didnt sing like the record but the band sure played like it! I had no idea the music was canned. Too much Time... Sounded good but I never liked "he's not the President". As the album played on I was a bit disappointed that the songs were not closer sounding to the originals. Snowblind was good but when they sing "Snowblind, Snowblind, Snowblind!" It was much slower than on the PT album. Best Of Times I actually liked better than the studio version. Same with Suite Madame Blue. But at this point I noticed something else. Dennis's voice sounded different. Not bad, just different. Almost as if he had a bad cold when they recorded this. I was very disappointed in ROckin The Parsdise. Where were the cool piano swipes? The vocals were pretty bad too. BCM was not much different than the studio version. Miss America..... Well after a while I learned to enjoy this live version during te guitar and keyboard solos. But I never understood why JY sang it in a higher register than like he does the studio version-- even to this day. Seems to me it would be easier to sing lower. I have never liked the vocals on the live version. Skipping on to Fooling Yourself, this one was another enjoyable track. However I never liked the cold ending. The final two have me mixed results. Crystal Ball was another excellent live tune but the keyboard sounded less "flutey" and more like the keys on SMB. Finally, CSA also took some getting used to. Again Dennis sounds like he had a bad cold and was always disappointed he didn't sing "to carry on". The keyboards sounded different and to this day I have wondering why they cannot replicate the the "swooping" sounds (or whatever) during live shows (and it even sounds different on Regeneration).

Over all I liked it a lot even tho some of the tracks didnt sound as good as I wanted them too. This was my first exposure to live Styx so it was all I had to go on at the time. Later as he 80's drew on I made contact with other fans thru Donna Lettow's news letter and began trading bootlegs, all of which were better than CITA.

I recently bought this on vinyl again 2-3 months ago. Paid $3 for it in close to mint condition. Revisited it for the first time in a long time and enjoyed seeing the live pics again. RTP is much better as far as live albums go (and even better than that is the live show from the PT tour from Japan).
